Beast of Nurgle

After weeks and weeks of pondering and forum searching, of pontificating and book reading, of peaked interests and the inevitable dashed hopes, I still cannot find an army that grabs at me. Maybe I should just take the plunge, but I find it so hard. My cycle has gone as such: dwarfs, warriors, daemons, vampires, ogres, and now back to daemons. But wherever I look, my research yields. Some result that inevitably drives me away from each of these armies. The search for my perfect army is driving me insane... its either the fluff behind the army isn't enough to hold my interest, or the armies doesn't play well on the table or it lacks the versatility I crave.... I really need help. Is there something wrong with me? Am I crazy? God I just want to pick an army, and start having fun. Help me chose. Fluff wise I really like the idea of bretonnians; developing my own house and heraldry... making an army with a story behind it, that advances with every skirmish, every war. I also love the fluff behind DoC's Skulltaker, almost enough to play just for him. But doc is too faceless in my opinion, just faceless hordes of the dark god's playthings.. not to much character development behind that. But the problem is, brets suck. They are far too cookie cutter in order to be competitive. Daemons are powerful, but lacking in vital places in my heart. Plus they are a shameless powerarmy and that turns me away aswell. I need help find an army full of versatility and character who plays well on the board, and has decent looking models. I. Know im a mess. I just need help find the right army. Please, you are my last chance!

To be honest, 90% of the game is reading through your book, then buying, building/converting, and painting miniatures.
Go with brets. You can run whatever you want and probably have some fun playing them even if you don't want to run the "copy&paste tournament army"
it really is about which army you like the look and story of, the table top is not the most important part of the hobby.

What about Lizardmen? They seem to fit the same criteria as Brets do with me, and they are easier to paint!
What do you guys think? Do lizardmen have as much character as Brets? What else can you all tell me about them?

I personally love them. I've always been a fan of the Aztec and Mayans and this army plays very much along with that in both theme and overall appearance. They've got temple cities, in various states of ruin, all over the southern half of the far west continents, aswell as one in where Africa is (don't remember it's name). I've just gotten the newly released Oldblood along side Tehehauin and they are alot of fun to paint. The new model fits together quite well and looks nice. Tehehauin is simply amazing, standing atop his enemy, it's heart held high in the air as he wordlessly claims victory, beautiful picture of the Aztecs for me. Playstyle-wise I cannot help you but for looks and fluff I highly encourage reading the army book and browsing some of the models on the GW site

+1 to that. Also, Pervertdhermit's advice stands true, the largest part is not the tabletop.
And don't worry, you're not the only one out there! Although you may be taking a little longer than average, it's worth getting the army that you'll be happy with.

They have a lot of character in them imo. You said that you liked the idea of building up the fluff of a Bret house, well a similar thing can be done with the LM. There's a lot of LM cities in the warhammer world, including a few just beside the TK territories and spawnings of LM that relates to each of their gods. Their background is far reaching to the beginnings of the warhammer world, so having a history behind a city is easy .
Their range of models are nice as well, even if many groan seeing a slaan in the magic phase. Personally really like the temple guard models and the old kroxigor models. I'd try to have a flick through their background in the army book and look at their models if they're an option that appeals and see how inspired you feel.
