I've just started Fantasy and built up the models, Now It's getting to the stage where I have to put the movement trays together. I'm not etirely sure how I should rank them up

I have a unit of 20 Swordmasters, 20 Sea Guard and 20 Phoenix Guard.

personally i would go 6-7 on the swordmasters, 5 on the seaguard and 6 on the phoenix guard.

keep in mind that you should not always decide your rank width before deployment. ideally you want the sword masters to be exactly wide enough to get 2 more models than your opponent is wide to take maximum advantage of your 2A.

seaguard are spearmen that shoot, so you take advantage of the extra rank attack from spears and elf rule + using the volley fire rule.

6 on the phoenix guard because its a good number in this edition, if someone is 5 wide 20mm you get 6 vs 5, if they are 25mm your 6 on 6.

Personally I made all my High Elf movement trays 140mm by 100mm. This means I can use them for either 5 wide by up to 7 deep, or 7 wide up to 5 deep. How many models wide your formation should be is dependent on the role. Usually, a unit that doesn't deal a lot of damage is best in ranks of 5 wide (Phoenix Guard, Spearmen, Lothern Sea Guard). Units that are expected to deal a lot of damage should run the frontage that will result in the largest amount of front rank models being able to strike (this is especially true for units with more than 1 attack per model). Usually, this is 7 wide for High Elves (as most units you will be fighting will be 5 wide).

I'm having my Noble in the Swordmasters so i'll certainly go for 7 wide so it gives me 3 ranks, 5 wide on the Sea Guard then 6 Wide with the Phoenix Guard that will have my Archmage in.

Cheers
