Greetings one and all. This is the thread that is going to showcase my efforts to build and, woefully, paint a renegade imperial guard army.
I will be using the Vraks army list and I'm working on making a somewhat good list right now. More about that later on perhaps.
I am also working on some fluff for these and a potential campaign (That I'm calling "The Sin of Hope" All in the name of grimdark, huh.) about a Imperial world seceding from the Imperium and these little fellas will be the ones fightning the good fight against the brutal dictatorship of the Imperium and it's loyalist lackeys in the form of Sonckas Winter Imperial Guard (Check them out and subscribe!). More on this later as well!
Anyhoo! I have, just now, finished the first Infantry squad of ten and please offer any critic or critisicm you can think of. I am a big boy and I can take it. I would especially hear what you have to say about the colorscheme I went with as I'm not sure about it.
Now I do think it's pics-o'-clock. The quality of the pictures may be a bit dodgy at times, sadly I have to take pictures with a phone as I don't own a camera right now. Oh well. I hope you enjoy.

That's a great looking squad, a promising start.
I like that they are so diverse but still looking like a cohesive force.

And thanks for advertising my thread! I'll do the same for you, then.

(But the pic of the elite is missing!)

Great start! The gas mask heads look very cool indeed

Thanks fellas. I want them to look a bit ragtag as opposed to a unified military force. Glad that you liked them.
I've fixed the picture of the "elite" that I forgot to link into the thread.

Looking really nice! 'Ragtag' was exactly what I was thinking when I read your last post, so you nailed that. The variation is great too - looks like a lot of scavenged equipment. I like your colour scheme, as the kind of 'drab' nature of the fatigues and gas masks really fits the theme.
One little tip though - I think the metal on the flak looks a little flat at the moment. Are you drybrushing boltgun over black? If you want to add just a little more texture, an easy (and surprisingly fun!) step is to stipple some scorched brown and (sparing amounts of) orange on there, then hit it with a blue wash. I think the best solution is weathering powders, but they're a little pricy Just a suggestion, of course, and feel free to ignore.
I'm a big fan of all your gas mask variation - I recognise FW, maxmini and some pig iron in there, great mix! Loving this project so far, and really looking forward to seeing where you take it!

Thank you, Scarper! Nice to hear they come off as intended.
I'm doing boltgun metal with a devlan wash and a very sparing highlight of chainmail on some areas for the armour but, indeed, it could look better and definatly more weathered. This stipple suggestion sounds very interesting I must say. Do you mix the scorched brown with a small amount of orange or do you stipple them on seperatly?
I've amassed quite a large amount of different gasmask heads, and am always on the look out for more cool heads. You got it right, these are FW, Maxmini and Pig Iron. I also have a bunch of different Westwind heads with masks for the Disciples of Xaphan squads.

A teeny update.
Painted a test model from one of my Disciples of Xaphan squads, basically a renegade version of a Imperial Guard Veteran squad but elites instead of troops. Just wanted to try out how their colours would look on a finished model. Not overly happy with him and he turned out to be a frustration to highlight for some reason. Anyhow, have a look.

Greenstuffed a mask on a Cadian head. Eh, I'm not that great with greenstuff.

A shot of the backpack I made.

Hope you enjoyed. Please tell me what you think and hopefully I will have a more substanial update in the near future.

How did you do the backpack?

It's the "power bit" from the handle of a ork rokkit launcha and the canister is plasticard tubing with greenstuffed ends. Glad you like him.
Just noticed the skin on his hands needs another coat though and a wash though.

Thanks. Quite happy with him so far. He's almost done now.
Work has momentarily stopped as I've run out of just about everything now for real.
Got a 750 points list written up and my first ambition is to paint everything in it up so I have a small playable force that is completely painted!
Also working on the fluff and trying not to make it just Siege of Vraks revisited.

I tried writing up a little Guard-list, but can't for the life of me get it below ~830 points...
Looking forward to your fluff.

Done some more painting:

A nearly finished platoon command squad. Just needs one more lasgunner. (And the bases need to be finished)

Standard bearer for my company command squad.

The exalted champion himself

And again

Not sure if I like how the blade came out.

And the command squad as it stands so far. The vox operator and the flamer totin' renegade need to be painted to complete it.

They are all wearing the new and improved black painted armour. Before it was a much lighter gray. I prefer it this way. Though I'm still on the fence about it.

Comment and criticise to your hearts content please!

They probably just went over to chaos for attention then.

I painted three more basic militia, bringing the number of painted basic renegades up to twenty. Two full squads.

The one on the right, that has been working out, is not that yellow in real life. It was due to the gak light.
(I should get a better picture taking situation)

Made another Exalted Champion. This one looks more err... Championy. He is quite the kitbash and I'm very pleased with him.

I also tried sculpting a head from greenstuff. Granted this is my first try but I think it turned out great and I think I'll have a full squad of these heads. What do you guys think?

Now that's a great looking Champion.
Look out for the massive mould lines on his legs, though!

As for the sculpted head, it must be the best looking green stuffing I have ever seen. You should definitely do a whole squad's worth, if not more.

The mold lines are now removed. I often miss mold lines as I'm impatient during assembly.
Thanks for the comments guys.
I've also bought some more maxmini bits. Some AKs and some biohazard heads. The heads were far larger than I'd thought though so I don't know what to use them for now. We'll see. Could be used for Death Guard Termies or something like that maybe.

Heh. I should put a beret on the greenstuff man and he could go: "You cannot be french canadian and not drink wine! It is a TRAVESTY!"
