Hey all!
Long time dakkaite.. but I've been hiding in the shadows fora while..
Recently got serious bout learning solidworks (as it's industry standard for industrial designers)
Here are the first assemblies of my contemptor dreadnought model.. comment on my accuracy / give me tips! (knowledge not money!)
Thanks Forge World for making me buy more stuff!!
p.s. anyone have some good multi-view shots of contemptor parts? easier to get dimensions while working off a picture..

the lascannon mounting point is missing a plate on top of the lascannon bodies.. but besides that I'm pretty happy- Note! the barrels aren't drilled out because this is for a simulation mold creation file

I would add some edge loops to bevel the edges, they look extremely sharp!

Thats really well done for the first run at the contemptor.
I agree that the edges need some softening, but just a bit so the look more natural (well, as natural as a 15 ft. tall metal monstrosity can look).
Cant wait to see the rest.

here's a question.. what chapter should I colour this monstrosity? no.. not space wolves.. something that doesn't require extra modeling..
dark angels?... i think preheresy black would be boring... so would deathwing.. umm smurfs? BLOOD ANGELS?!?
P.s. if any of you like the real life plasma rifle below (wip) you can check out my portfolio..

Really cool, do you just play with it until it looks right? Or do you measure the original model and input it? I don't know anything about this stuff. What is the reason for doing this? Do you use it to plan out schemes for your models or is it just for fun?

Well a lot of it is looking at pics of it which sucks cause you need to build it component by component and then assemble it together in a separate document.. so sometimes you lose reference between the scale of the pieces
I'm mainly doing it cause i need to learn solidworks to be competitive in my industry and what better way to stay interested than model something fun
my site has renderings of an electric toothbrush I've done too...
www.coroflot.com/unorthodoxdesign
It's cool though cause you can save new versions of the same file and edit them so making a chaosey variant will be relatively easy.

Almost done! Automatically Appended Next Post: I still haven't really 'branded' the dreadnought.. I figure this way it's more generic for my portfolio and can be upgraded in the future to conform to a chapter...

You are not off to a bad start, but your proportions are way off. For instance the left arm is atleast 50% to small in diameter. Same goes for the upper legs, they are to skinny. Largely the problem is that the model is to tall currently. If you look at the pictures on the forgeworld site you can clearly see that the front most part of the shin plating is square. Also, the torso is to large compared to the limbs, the shoulders should be almost as high as the top of the torso, the head is also sitting too high in the cavety.
Tbh if you want more (and better) feedback on the modelling aspect I'd suggest posting on www.cgtalk.com, one of the largest modelling/digital art communities on the web. What you'll need though is some renders of the model in a generic t-pose, preferably isometrically rendered (the way you see the model in your viewports). That way it is a lot easier to properly see dimensions etc.
I hope this doesnt sound to harsh, the general shape you created is good, its mostly an issue of scaling certain aspect to get it to look perfect.

yeah the major issue was lack of reference material.. the few pics i did find didn't always have every angle of a component covered. By the end I was more just trying to get ti done than worrying bout proportions but it's definitely an issue. Do you know of any way to import an existing part into a new part file and 'ghosting' it or turning it into construction geometry to be used as a visual reference versus part of the solid body?
