After Christmas our club is running a 30K tournament. Rules from BOLS 30k, 1000points (+ 1 Primarch).

My budget is £150 and my thoughts are the following.

Ferrus Manus, Scribor Templar with a Techmarine AXE. (BOUGHT)

1 x Space Marine Captain. (BOUGHT)

Troops x 2 10 Man Tacticals with 2 Rhino's

I have looked at Forge World stuff (£84 for 20 Men but they are nice) but I don't know whether to go for the MkIII Iron Armour (which looks cool) but it doesn't fit with their high tech and close relationship with the Mechanicum. So I was thinking of the Heresy Armour mkV although again it wouldn't fit the fluff, so that leaves me with the mk4.

That leaves me £45 to buy 2 Dreadnoughts and some Iron Hands Bionics and the Bolters and Missiles from FW and some Rhinos, I think I need to look at this again. As I still need to get an Assault Terminator Unit. Does anyone have any suggestions Pauldrons, small pieces such as rubber pipe work or pieces for Techmarine conversions of my Assault Terminator unit.

Okay so I have bought the parts from FW and completely overspent, but so what I earn a good crust and i have little enough free time so it's all about me. I will update this blog with some pictures... Looks like this project will cost £300 or there abouts but I am not skimping on the aesthetic.

EDIT broke my Tripod and Lighting rig as one fell on top of the other. Will post up some pictures today with my small pocket camera.

The shield will remain but I have covered it's original detail, so it will be a nice smooth simple shield. I want a simple Iron Hand symbol or alternatively a Mechanicum Skull in the centre of the Primarch's shield.



To round out my Force my Captain will be the awesome Captain Gabriel Santar (missing the top of the Servo arm, need to pin it in place).



The Bell of Lost Souls Stat-line for Santar is pretty Badass.

Yeah, I was looking at about 10 threads on Dakka for Iron Hand inspiration. Here is "Soft Tac" mock up... (need to buy Zap a Gap tomorrow Morning).

Bought some Resin Bases that should look good with Iron Hands.

I'm doing a pre-heresy emperor's children army. Max mini is the way to go, I've ordered a ton of stuff from them. The Terminator shoulder pads and the jump packs are awesome.

Damn Commander Cain...Those steam punk weapons are awesome the Sword of the far left looks like the "Micardo" from Xeno-Blade Chronicles.

In a pinch, you could use Vaylund Cal's rules (from Badab 2: heretical boogaloo) to represent Ferrus Mannus.

There is alot of Love for the Iron Hands out there, but it's like being in a Masonic Lodge. People won't talk about it unless they know you are a follower of "Ferrus Manus" as well. Not like all these blood Cherubs, space puppies and Ultrasmurfs who never shut up about their chapters. Iron Hands, the thinking mans' choice.

Looks like a cool project, I'll be watching to see what you come up with.

Still working through them. I have all the models and pieces, i need to create 2 more sergeants and I will have them all ready. I am being very precious with the models, cleaning every mould line, not gluing until I am absolutely sure of myself and I am also pondering on how to assemble the model so that I can give them the best possible paint job. Want to get this all done by Friday so I can spray them Matt black over the weekend and start the paint job.

The Eagle-eyed amongst you can spot the old 2nd edition Marine, I am using him as Test Paint model. He will Matt blacked at the weekend and I will test out several paint techniques.

Okay, so today I actually considered the whole concept of my force in relation to the fluff. This will be a long winded post with no pictures (they will be ready on Saturday!!).

Given the Iron Hands had a great affinity for technology, they didn't (according the fluff i have read) develop in to in full blown techno-philes until the death of Ferrus Manus. Now in my force he is alive, so I have decided to dial back the bionics slightly e.g. not every marine will have an augmentation as per 40k Iron Hands. But about 20%-40% will, I think this is enough to show their affinity before it went to full blown worship.

Now to the subject of colour scheme. I love Brother Argo's Marines and i definitely want to copy the weathering and chips on the armour.

However I want to try to paint my marines to look like Iron...Not Steel or silver, but like Cast Iron black like this...



With some Silver/boltgun elements (weapons trim etc) and white for Skulls and Cogs.

My plan is as follows.

1. Chaos Black primer (light coat).
2. 2nd light coat to ensure whole model is evenly covered.
3. I want to Dry brush in a Charcoal colour just off black.
4. A light drybrush with a Dark grey (adeptus battle grey?)
5. A light wash of Chaos Black (with flow aide, and Glaze medium) to bring it together.
6. Tin Bits for all metal area's (trunk straps, belts, weapons Bionics etc).
7. Boltgun metal or maybe Chainmail (a dark metal colour) ontop of the Tin Bits leaving some tin bitz showing.
8. Some highlights with mithyril silver or Boltgun metal on the metal bits.
9. White details on Skulls and cogs etc.
10. Red lenses, and purity seals.
11. Bases to be distressed metal with lots of oxidation. Using Tamiya weathering powders to get a nice effect.

The overall effect is to be like Cast Iron Armour, with lots of additions and details.

I am going to try this plan above on the 2nd edition Marine to see if it works.

Hey mwnciboo, Looking forward to you putting 'pen to paper' as such... so 'paint to marine'.

I've been considering colours for the Iron Hands I'm making and haven't fully decided on a colour scheme.
As is necessary I will be testing it out on a mini before hand, but looking at your plan of action, I must say I'm highly tempted to copy most, if not all, of your idea!
It can be so hard to differentiate between the different "black" marines at times, and what you have come up with seems to be a truly unique approach to the colour black.

All this being said I still want to try out my current idea, but if that fails, you've prompted me to have to rethink just what kind of black an Iron Hand marine would be seen in.
Current idea:
1) Black Primer
2) 2/3 chaos black, 1/3 boltgun metal coat
3) Highlights of 1/2 adeptus grey, 1/2 chainmail (boltgun?)
I want these babies to shine

I'd thought about metallics in a very similar way to yourself, the only other differences would be I'd have more blue in my marines, only on lenses mind you though.

Oh and, you have NO idea how many hours I've sunk into Advance wars

You could run them as plague marines?

I always thought the heavily mechanised Iron Hands suit the profile of a Plague Marine.

Considering this is a pre Heresy idea that might not quite be the case.

Sounds like a solid plan mwnciboo, I would have to see a test model before I could be sure it would work as sometimes drybrushing marines makes them look grainy and rough, though this could be avoided with very subtle coats if you really tried.

My other option would be to start off with a very dark grey/ adeptus battlegrey, and then shade the entire armour with chaos black or badab black to bring out the depth in the armour.

Also, I dread to think how heavy a suit of cast-iron armour would be, that stuff is heavy!!!

Also done some experiments with the 2nd edition Marine. The Badab black on Boltgun metal is quite good, but I use also 1/3 of tub of Badab black on one Miniture. I have discovered that Vallejo do a Metallic Medium, so I worked this into Chaos Black and it went a beautiful metallic black. I have subsequently shifted on the DALER-ROWNEY Shimmering Copper Medium, it is a much larger tube and is a nice pink colour which takes any other colour. I think this gives a slightly different, take on the black whilst still having the miniatures look like Iron Hands but slightly different to the most peoples Iron Hands.

Continuing my quest for perfection or at least for very high quality I have seperated every marine into 4 sections, a Body Section with one arm, an arm with weapon, Backpack, and the Base . The reasoning is to make it easier to paint and detail before the final assembly. Equally I have been drilling all the Marines and pinning every piece, so once painted it will glide together with a minimum of glue.

I can recommend collecting a force in one go, it's easier to get a unified theme and hopefully the paint scheme will be cohesive as I will do them all as one. As well as this I am mixing my paints so all the force look identical, so I have sacraficed a Chaos Black by topping it up with metallic medium. The planning I have put into this project is beginning to show, as in the past I have mixed, matched , begged, borrowed or swapped and integrated Ideas as I go. With this Project however everything is in place, the points limit set, the budget set (supposedly) so my weeks in planning have paid off. It has taken a fair amount of self discipline because I like the rush my projects (look at my other WIP's and you'll see I like to power through my projects and not let them hang over me) taking my time, being methodical and not cutting corners (with things like mould lines, or conversions) looks like it's paid off handsomely. Just goes to show you can teach an old dog new tricks....

I can't wait to see these boys with some paint, some nice metallic armor perhaps? Unit insignia? I'm liking this a lot, good on ya.

Okay, Update. My 50% painted Gabriel Santar.






So, you can see the main body colour, this is a 50/50 combination of Chaos Black and Daler-Rowney Shimmering Copper Medium. I am very happy with base Metallic colour, I have drybrushed with boltgun metal and highlighted with mithryl Silver.



I want to go back over him now, Repaint the Bolt Pistol, Black or Silver, and then go for more fine detail and revisit the sword. But you can see the Metallic scheme I am going for with the Basic Marines.

EDIT now 90% Complete....my HQ..

I really like the Iron Halo, I used a Brass Cog and then put an Iron hands symbol on top simple but effective.



And the full minaiture, ready for basing and final gluing.



Now to complete the whole force to this standard.

Thanks, I agree on the black bolters, much better. I do have the custom base's I put earlier in the Thread, I have them sprayed silver and am trying to distress them and add lots rust and oxidation.

I need to finish the Power Sword, and I have painted every individual power cord in the Servo arm. Rather than the Ice Blue I did earlier.

BTW loving your WIP blog, especially the bases. The level of detail on your bases is quite stunning.

Thanks for the comments about my blog, the bases were really just a product of a video from mike @ epic duck studios, which is a quick tutorial about cobblestone basing, and sometime messing about with ideas. If you want I can add the link to the video.

We need to start an Article Dedicated to the Iron Hands. I'll dedicate my Iron hands as the 5th Company, and we'll see if we can create an entire mixed Chapter of Iron hands representing every Clan.

sounds like a genius idea. I think I'll finish the project then ask my friend which compay he'd want to represent and get something up then.

Wow, I am blown away by 99% of what he has done. The Sternguard Legs don't work for me, but the fact that he is pushing the boundaries and has really encapsulated the feel of the Iron Hands is amazing. The Librarian Techmarine Conversion is my absolute favourite.

I know, they are astounding... makes me feel like I haven't put enough effort in! :(

I might take a few of the things he has done into consideration, but I'm going to try and keep true as my marines are just a tactical squad... though I should have put more IH icons on them as I did buy some...
