I have been a avid tournament player for the past 10 years and only recently gotten into painting. I want to share some minies I have done so that I give people the opportunity to share tips and feedback on my results. I am not a experienced painter but currently my motivation is high so I have been looking into the tricks of the trade. I will do my best to add more pics asap as I have some models I would like to put out there.

I began with dipping and this is something I still suggest all gamers who just want a ready tabletop army should do. I am hopefully leveling my skills and adding to my available techniques. I recently acquired a airbrush and hopefully ill have something to show.

Ongoing or finished projects

High Elves:
I stayed away from 8th edition for a long while and when I did try it out I noticed I need a lot of additional models. Well, I bought some and got busy, ill add pics of some units that are done. The base of the army was painted a few years ago by dipping... the new models are trying to emulate this with a generous wash coat over the base colors and highlighting on them. This makes the army a bit warm and woodelfy. I have some models ready and should be able to get them online soonish once I figure out the camera. My initial pictures are not worthy of uploads.

Airbrushed IoB Griffon (WIP)
Pre-shade and highlights

Base-coats

Prince

Spearmen

DreadFleet, ships ahoy:
I dont have any intrest in the game but I did like the content of the box. I got it to get the opportunity to paint some different paint schemes... basically to stay away from whole units. The game will end up for sale on ebay or somewhere. Ill try to get it done within a month.

The Shade Wraith (more pics behind the thumbnail)

Dwarf Dirgible

Imperial Guard: Mechanized Tallarn

Pilot Chimera

Imperial Guard: Cadia

Pilot Chimera

Ogre Kingdoms:
I currently have more motivation than models so I accepted a commission on ogres. I am not a professional painter but this gives me a great opportunity to get some painting done. The models have been ordered and am just waiting for them to arrive. The goal is to paint a decent tabletop army within the next few months. I am also interested to see if I will enjoy painting models for others or if this is just a one-time thing.

Ironguts

Ogre Bulls 1

LeadBelchers

Gorger

Dark Eldar Razorwing:
I saw a gorgeous Razorwing painted by Les from APJ... 5 minutes later I ordered one for me. Its been two week but still hasnt arrived. I am still excited about this project so will jump on it as soon as it arrives. I dont play dark eldar and have no plans of starting, so I expect to sell it once done. I will try out new stuff with my airbrush.

Finished the Dirgible

Had trouble getting a pic of it so had to end up going in with the flash. The hull is over exposed but the pic gives a good show of the shades in the base.

One of my older models, WhiteLion unitfiller,

I am quite happy with it. Its dipped and then highlighted over it. I guess I have to go back and do the gems again though.

Yesterday I decided to take my airbrush to a real model, so heres some WIP pics of my IoB Griffon.

The highlights dont come out very strong and I had some basic problems with spluttering, pretty much whats expected in the beginning I guess. I could have used my better airbrush for this since the spray was a bit too wide, but I am waiting for some spare parts since I wrecked it earlier. Im not disappointed on how the model turned out, its not perfect but at this point I guess it shouldnt be. I am just glad I didnt ruin it, practice makes perfect

Pictures are less than perfect, but learning as I go. Hope they are viewable.

I realize the choice in model and color scheme make it extremely woodelfy, something the poor fellow has to live with

Got something new to show, my unit of spearmen

Dakka Gallery

I am pleased how the models turned out. I think they are good regimental tabletop standard and were not too painful to paint.

Shields are WIP since I dont know what I should do with them. So far thinking of going 50/50 with army colors, white and light green and adding some symbol in the middle in black.

WIP pics of my Razorwing. APJ Les and the Razorwing he did was my muse. I hope the pics are the right size. I did not put much effort into the actual photographing since this is still a wip post. The pics have not been modified. This is the first model I am trying to paint with an airbrush. I have practiced on paper, basecoating and preshading models, including the WIP IoB Griffon.

This is according to my original plan to have red shadows. Basecoated and preshaded. I failed the effect and later did normal gray shadows.

Beginning work on the white

As I mentioned, I failed the process and switched to gray, no pics of this I am afraid.

Here a pic of an almost ready flyer

My first issue, how should I paint the gems on the hull?
a) Metallic red with metallic highlights?
b) Regular red gems?
c) Dont paint them, looks done?
d) other, what?

So far the Razorwing has proved to be challengin, the round shapes are tough. I have learnt a lot though so no biggie... most of it through mistakes. I dont feel the practice has been a waste.

Feedback is much appreciated, I am at the beginning of my learning curve and even small tips might help alot.

Marko

Oh, BTW... heres some stuff I noticed and dont like myself:
I had to paint the golden borders by hand, since I should have done them more early in the process to make the masking easier. Live and learn, airbrushing takes more pre-planning than I am used to. ATM they are definitely a bit thick and not subtle enough.
-The splotchy stars (2 of them) are there to hide a few gristly mistakes where I tried to clean the model with alcohol. My varnish layer was not thick enough to survive the handling.
-Weathering on the exhausts is a bit too "exploded" all over. If I would do it again, I would make the shape longer and thinner. I was trying different colors to get a nice light brown halo but it ended up expanding a bit too far... I dont think its catastrophic though, lesson learnt.

I painted the whole model with a 15€ airbrush, the control brought by a better model might obviously add a positive impact. I will know more when I get my spares for the Badger.

Razorwing done, I am pleased with the result. I ended up with red gems and the result is a bit... red.

The weapon options from the box are magnetized

Thats it for now (its gonna be for sale btw since I dont actually play Deldar)
I would love to read some comments concerning the model.

Something new on the eastfront

I got a few kg:s of fatties in mail today so preparing to start my ogre commission in force.

Whats better!! A pilot project for mechanized Tallarn:

Magnetized the hull weapons:

Practicing some camo:

I think this camo should look good on a tank. Its soft enough without strong contrasts and I think the color will support the weathering process nicely. Eager to start actual paintwork on the tank.

I have not painted desert camo before, any suggestions or tips? Do you approve the choice I am considering?

A few more pics. The pilot-unit of the ogre commission has got some color on. Never painted this many sideboobs in one go. Heres a few pics on testing the skin and pants theme (customer likes purple). The army will be painted to look good on the tabletop, so basically highlights need to be visible without piking the model up.

I think the pic below will give better perspective on the pants

Its till a bit of a mystery how I should paint the metal, but I am guessing there will be rust involved.

The Tallarn Chimera has received an undercoat but so far the camo is undecided so no real progress.

Some fatties ready for the tabletop. The wishes of the customer were "Black, purple... generally dark". So this is what I ended up with. I added more fluff to the base to get green to the palette. I am pleased with how they look, wouldnt mind pushing them around the board.

I tried to make strong highlights on the pants to make them more visible. Here are a few "far" shots.

A closer shot

It kinda shows the monotone of the models, I could add some diversity through bronze, although a dark feel was requested. I need to ask the customer on what he thinks.

I usually hate when the bases are lined with anything but black... now I find myself wondering if I should add more color to the model through this technique. What do you think?

Nice Ogres. Albeit a bit clean for my gorey tastes

I am now accepting commissions for any hobby project! I've been in the hobby since '92. Specializing in traditional brush methods, creating a gritty dark aesthetic. From single character models to entire armies. From individual terrain pieces to entire table tops. From tabletop level to masterclass level painting. From purchasing and assembly to leveling up your assembled armies paint job. If it has to do with the hobby I can do it! Hit me up and let's chat about your project!

Thanks for your comment! I have considered some gore effects to brighten the models up, need to find a suitably fast method. But in general I dont want the army to look like every model has dipped their hands in blood up to the elbows I think the weapons would benefit the most from a bit of red.

Good thing about gore effects is that I can add them to everything once finished. I was thinking of doing the tattoos last once all the fatties are generally done. I need to add the gore to the list of to-do's at that point

Airbrushing done on my WIP Chimera and time for weathering. I am testing oils for the first time and this is the result. I started with some basic chipping with acrylics and then switched to oils to do streaking. I am sure this vehicle is fighting on a planet where the desert is a result of something other than drought since the acid rains have left their marks.

I am pleased with the general look but I am eager to hear tips since this is my first try on weathering and its far from perfect. I think the general look is a bit too messy, and it hid all the color modulation done earlier.
-Did I use too much oil color? Should my wash be thinner?
-Should there be more "chipping"?

I am really enjoying painting tanks at the moment so would love to get feedback and tips. So if your taking a look, please tell me whats right or whats wrong with it. What should I pay attention to. I have tried to look at tutorials but doing it yourself is always different and challenging in the beginning.

Since I enjoy painting tanks at the moment, I would really love to get some feedback on the chimera. Criticism, tips... anything is much appreciated.

The next phase will be to add light rusting and then some details.

I finished the Tallarn Chimera, here is a "general feel" picture:

There are some points id like to discuss though ->
This picture shows some chipping, rain streaks and light surface rusting, I think they are quite succesful:

Heres two effects done using pigments, rust and dusts:

Closeup on rust:

I am not a huge fan of the current dust effect but I like the rust, its not too much in your face. Should I remove some of the dust to make it a bit more subtle? I am interested in any tips on pigments, I used different methods of applying them but, mixing it with glaze medium resulted in (nor surprisingly) paint and almost ruined the other track. I have looked at multiple tutorials, but it proved to be the most difficult technique/tool.

Ogre commission advancing slowly, heres a pic heavy update

The army theme is dark, so I decided to do the gorger in lighter colors. I think its ok. THe pic is a bit funny though, the few pics I took kinda failed cause the models face was kinda in my face all the time.

LeadBelchers, matches are a bit dull but I think the model works. Although, the mold lines need more work:

WIP Ironblaster, cow... I like it. The hairless patcches are not quite as red as how the pics portray

Enough models are done to post a pic showing how the army will look together, I think it works well

Been busy so time for only a small update.

Finished an ogre bruiser

Currently still working on the ironblaster, the cow shown previously. Also added another Chimera to my WIP table. It will be an as waste-themed cadian car. I will try to add some WIP pics of the different phases.

WIP Update

Working on an ogre butcher. I intend to make the skin much lighter than on the regurlar ogres, here some comparisons between models that are on the same stage.

Then the Chimera, everything magnetized except the ML which will be done later once I get the missing part.. Unlike last time, I will be working up from black. I will try to get a pic of every phase to show the transformation. Lets see what we get.

for the first time, I tried mixing a bit of vallejo airbrush cleaner with my thinner, loved the result and will have to try it again too... it was just awesome. Had totally missed the tip previously.

Some WIP updates
Skin of the ogres done, comparison between normal and pale butcher:

Creating an ash-waste type of chimera, using FW-models as inspiration
If undercoating was the first step, then the second is the basecoat:

I was wondering if I should have utilized the black undercoat more. Building a darker tone by leaving more of it to shade the grey.

Then stage 3, some light toning

Step 4, toning rivets what not

Step 5, drybrush

6+7, camo and some toning

8, more rivets and what not

Step 9 was to drybrush the camo, no pick of that.

Next step is to add army and squad markings, then some weathering, starting with chipping.

I assume that the weathering will tie the colors together and make the image a bit darker.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
More WIP pics of the Chimera. Painted some details and added the decals prior to weathering.

The car in question is the transport of the first infantry unit of the first infantry platoon in the fifth Cadian company, part of the second army group

The vehicle is slowly, stage by stage, starting to take form. Now that decals are done I can start planning the weathering.

It was time for some chipping. I concentrated on the decals since I had not weathered them before and was curious.

Chipping was followed by a few layers of gloss varnish and the next step is taking out the oils.

Started the heavy weathering. It still needs a lot of cleaning work, but why not post a WIP pic while waiting for the thinner to evaporate a bit.

I felt like the grey definitely needed something, I think this color scheme will benefit more from strong weathering than the desert one.

I had the opportunity to clean the car a bit and now its starting to be more or less ready.

Still need to paint the weapons and add some small details like the lenses and text on the sides. Also have to do something with the tracks, not entirely sure what im gonna do with them though.

I think I still have some work ahead of me to get the grey camo right, but as this is a pilot I will get an opportunity to do some fine tuning.

Heres the next phase. It might be a bit aggressive but lets see how it will look in the end. I think the colors need some work too.

As background, the tank is for a post-apocalypse themed army. Fellow liked the tallarn tank and using it as reference. Will see what we decide to do on the following models but for the first one im going with heavy weathering which does not necessarily mean disuse but just a hostile environment.
