Hi, I have decided to make a modular gaming board, for my chaos. I have already bought the squares from B&Q (they even cut the wood to the right size for free!). And now i would like some ideas on what to put on them. I have 8 2' by 2' sections. I will make it out of polystyrene, and show you my work in progress as i work on it. These are my basic ideas:
Lava for rivers etc.
General rocky/granite islands
Floating meteors/warpstone in the Tzeentch section
Rivers of blood in the Khorne section
Rivers of pus in the Nurgle section
Purple lava in the Tzeentch section?
A giant Chaos star
Lava/equivelant is in all the cornes (1/2' on each end of each side)
Some sections will be mostly rock, while others will be mostly lava
I will include cool stuff like skull stepping stones etc. later
No Slannesh!!!
I may have some more ideas later, if you could add your own it would be great, cool stuff like floating meteors are welcome as well.
Thanks
Nickick Automatically Appended Next Post: P.s. i will post up my drawings all ready as soon as possible...

I have updated my Nurgle board, i hope that it has finished drying, i still need to know what other materials i can make lava (/pus/blood) out of.
Thanks to JohnnoM for first reply, (even if it wasnt helpful)
I need some more ideas for another Nurgle section, and will draw up some Tzeentch and Un-Divided ones A.S.A.P.

You've got a lot of naked styrofoam so far, so I assume you'll be buying plenty of material to cover that which might easily serve to texture your rivers of blood/lava flows/etc. Spackle/drywall filler or latex caulk are reasonably priced and can be teased into shape well enough to represent what you need, after the appropriate paintjob (and gloss varnishing, where appropriate, like blood and pus).
I'd recommend breaking up some bits of cork board to float in your lava section (adds visual interest, is easily drybrushed with passable OSL for the snazzy factor, and can be placed in groups to make stepping stones which allow in-game movement options), as well as some small, round objects (airsoft BBs, ball bearings, clay or putty balls) to sink into the surface (or chop in half and glue on top) to represent bubbles. Adds a lot more to the look than a simple painted gradient.

Actualy i was going to sand it into shape, then paint over it in PVA then spray it so that it doesnt melt, would you reccommend otherwise? I'd recommend breaking up some bits of cork board to float in your lava section (adds visual interest, is easily drybrushed with passable OSL for the snazzy factor, and can be placed in groups to make stepping stones which allow in-game movement options), as well as some small, round objects (airsoft BBs, ball bearings, clay or putty balls) to sink into the surface (or chop in half and glue on top) to represent bubbles. Thats a good idea, I hadn't thought of that. Are there any materials that act a little bit like liquid greenstuff, but that are cheaper? Also i was thinking of making bone bridges and skull stepping stones etc. around half of the boards will be mosly lava, the other half mostly rock. Automatically Appended Next Post: I was thinking for Tzeentch, maybe some stuff like this for cool terrain?

And maybe something like this for Nurgle/undivided terrain

And this for Khorne or any other god, I can ask the guys to change the symbols

Ive got some more pics up now. I started a Khorne board, as i didnt have any ideas for another Nurgle one. It has a lot more space for moving than the Nurgle one. When I have finished it i will post up some pics of the 2 of them together.

I would definitely slather a thin layer of lightweight spackle over that foam, then sand smooth after it dries, that much white styrofoam is going to create problems without a harder shell over it. Doing PVA glue and fine sand/gravel/dust mixtures after will also help add to the strength.
Can't wait to see it finished!

What do you mean by lightweight spackle? I think that Im not going to finish the one Im working on at the moment, I will try to get one of my friends to draw me an A4 sized bloodletter head, and just cut it out. That means I need to draw some more ideas up Terraformer, have you got any ideas i could put on to it? I saw your Unicorns & Rainbows in happy land battleboard, and it was ACE! Also, I wish I could afford to commission you to make/convert some awesome terrain for it :(

Sorry for the late reply, I've been buildin' stuff, lightweight spackle (pollyfill is another name, or lightweight patch compound) is a pre-mixed glue/gypsum paste used to fill small holes on walls and such. It can be spread then and dries relatively fast, without shrinking at all. I use it over everything, it would make a significantly stronger shell over your foam.
As for ideas, I wish I could contribute but I doubt you would want to undertake the stuff that pops into my head. (sculpted lava monsters, lighted chasms, etc.) instead focus on how you'll be playing on the board, and what kind of landmarks might be fun to scramble troops around. Aim for flat, playable areas to offset all the impassable lava, with bridges, floating slabs of rock in the lava, areas of small fumaroles and flat ground.
Good luck and have fun!

Great work on this board, Terraformers suggestion are top notch , To add that texture you could also use Liquid nails and or PVA , mixed with builders sand/ soil or filtered hardcore I did this recently and made a mini tutorial here.. also added some broken up slates and bits of cork , then finished off with some wet effect , but gloss varnish works just as well .
if you mix some grey cheap poster paint or and colour , then when dry lightly spray with white spray paint for highlighting the stones , I would add a few vertical things on the landscape like spiky poles people on crosses etc.. t break up the unifromity.
Look forward to seeing how it progresses.

WOW Neil those look great!
sculpted lava monsters
well actualy, ive got a cool statue i found somewhere, am thinking of putting that on it somewhere, hopefully make it look like the statues made out of lava.
Sadly, it does have to be able to be put into my holding area... They are about half an inch smaller than the spaces so...

Wow its been ages since I could get to work on this (social life, homework...), but here is the next update aswell as some drawings of ideas I have. I will be getting some zombies and maybe some sculpy soon - zombies for dead people and sculpy for cobblestone bridges etc. (idea from terraformer). Here are the pics of the first tzeentchian board. EDIT: ignore the 'close up of tzeentch symbol' it is actualy at the top right hand corner :(

Thats a cool looking board so far. I am looking forward to seeing it after the poly filler coating
You could possibly use a hot wire cutter to cut out the polystyrene, you would get a cleaner line and it would probably be quciker. BUT i am not sure on its fumes when heated lol. Been a while since i did Chemistry.

I am also looking forward to coating it in polyfiller
