Subject: Ogre Maneater Snipers and Firebellies w/potion of speed

Just wondering what kind of success people have had using Ogre Maneaters with Sniper and Poison or Scout. Seems you can make a unit of 4-6 move and fire (30" effective range) Ogre Maneaters with Sniper, Poison, Flaming (with banner) 2X shots and the ability to pick out each individual target of the ogre seems fairly good. The downside is they would cost roughly twice the cost of a bull.
Has anyone tried this out with sniping casters/characters, etc? What is the general consensus?
Would the sniper ability work if they are charged?
Also, has anyone tried giving Firebellies a potion of speed to use the firebreath attack at a higher I than the rest of the ogres?
Thanks.

it works ok, its especially good at sniping mages and characters without much armor.
It is expensive, but the good thing is that it doesn't make them totally useless at other things. They still have XHW in combat, with poison.
I think its best to keep the MEs cheap, so no banner. A musicion and maybe the Captain if you really have points.
yes, i belive the sniping ability would work while standing and shooting, although you will be taking a -3 to hit(Multi-shot, Sniper, Stand and Shoot)
I havn't tried the potion of speed, but it would certaintly be a good item to take if you have the points.

There's an errata in the rulebook FAQ. Sniper doesn't work with stand and shoot.

Good find, Warbrucey! Never noticed that one. Here's the reference.
Page 75 – Sniper
Change “A model making a[...]” to “unless making a Stand
and Shoot charge reaction, a model making a[...]” at the start
of the third paragraph.

It depends on how you are calculating cost. If you get lucky and kill a mage or the BSB early in the game it can be pretty devestating. And a unit of 3 with pistols is less than 200 points, so if they get lucky they are going to get their points back just by killing the target - never mind the bonuses that accrue form there.
One thing I would advise is that if you are going to try this tactic, to roll each ME individually - if you manage to kill the target, it allows you to move onto a different target.

I would think you 'd have better luck having them scout and eat artillary than trying to make a lucky shot against a wizard, most bsbs have at least a 2+ save. If you can hit the bugger, you've still got to wound and break his save. I'd felly lucky to get a wound on. Since most of my opponents take life, I'd say its like crawling up the wrong escalator backwards. Having 3 ogres in their backfield tearing up artillary or eating small units or pinning units in an awkward position is better use of the points. Scout and Stubborn sound like a better buy. Or scout and poison.

You can't combine Sniper and Multiple Shots.
If you use Sniper it's only 1 shot per model.
"A model with the Sniper special rule can make a special Sniper shot instead of shooting normally."
Hitting a single character hiding in a unit of bodyguards with two separate handguns at the same time is too hard. Using a brace of guns is for firing wildly into their midst without sniping.

This has been beaten to death and the conclusion is that they can be combined.
all special rules assume the absense of other special rules.
the base profile of a shooting weapon is 1 shot.
because of this, the Sniper rule speaks in the singular form.
Then the multiple shot special rule says that it is an exception to the normal amount of shots and you instead fire 2 or more shots as specified in the weapons entry.
The sniper special rule does not say you are forbidden from using multiple shots, ergo you can use them together.
besides, the difficulty of shooting 2 weapons at a single target is represented by there being a -2 total to the shot fired, one for sniping and 1 for multi-shot.
