I've just about finished my skaven, 40 clanrats left!!! WOOT!

Anyway, now looking for my second 40k army, which I'm going to base on the next edition of the tau codex when it comes out, but I'd like to start planning and production now.

So; I'd prefer not to use a current 40k army, as I'd like an origional, fluffy army. So what i've decided to do is base it off the various minor alien races of the 40k universe, who have banded together into a 'dogs of war' style mercenary pirate army.
The first aliens which I have decided to include are the dreaded Loxatl, who I will be basing off dark elf cold one cavalry (i've already tested some ideas out, and most of the time it really works) and they will be representing battlesuits.

However I need some more ideas to fill in other units, so if anyone can think of other alien races which couldm be used to fill this army, be my guest and post them. I also need a comander, any ideas concerning him will be much appriciated.

Tarellian Dog Soldiers (Think snouted lizards) would make a good replacement for fire warrior squads. Less armour but I'm sure you could find fluffy reasons to strap on some more armour. Not too sure what weaponry they use but since they're noted as working as merc for the tau there's a good chance they would carry tau gear.

Edit: As for a HQ I've always wanted to see someone make a Demiurg model (I lack any real green stuff ability), my own personal vision would be a dwarfish build in some kind of boiler suit overlayed with reactive armour panel and some kind of envirosuit head gear. Weaponwise converted industrial tools (high powered cutting laser, explosive mining tools etc.) Can count as command battle suit but without the sleekness, more of an industrial exo-suit.

well, there's the Hrud which IIRC are more or less Skaven which are typically snipers & assassins, there are also the clawed fiends of the Donorias belt which are these big furry beasts, don't forget Eldar pirates which are not Dark Eldar nor are they Craftworld Eldar, there's the Zoats & the Demiurg as well. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. But don't forget about Kroot & Vespid, they're mercs.

tarellian dog soldiers it is! not really a fan of the hrud tho, theyr'e just not my type of thing, ive had enough damn rats for one liftime (200 clanrats.... 200! im having a nervous breakdown here...) need more ideas tho.

The demiurg is a good idea, but i find it kinda annoying seeing as im doing philosophy a level and I cant help equating the name with plato! DAMMIT!
but it needs to be very distinctly a mercenary pirate (futuristic) captain, so he needs a couple others from his race to join him, he cant be a standalone captain from one race, it just wouldn't really work
plus, i like the reptile theme we have gong here. anyone else know any good 40k reptiles?

What about Krashrak the Stalker from the Inquisitor game?

Taking a brief look through the Lexicanum there's the Galg (a species of frog like reptiles that work as mercs within the tau empire). Lacrymole which were apparently scaled shape shifters, And finally Rak'Gol, 8 limbed giant reptiles who apparently like razor weaponry

I think what you are looking for is the Slann. Space lizards with guns. Depending on need, armament and what look you prefer, they could be either firewarriors or Kroot.

Wow, that is one pretty lizard. How did you paint that?

Looks great so far, but personally I think having the cold ones (or whatever you're actually going to call it, haha) weapon mounted on its shoulder instead of its chest would look better. Might give you a bit more freedom in how they look too (and can perhaps incorporate the saddle a bit more as well).

As for how it's painted:
Ice blue and dheneb stone 1:2 mix as a base coat. Put a 1:1 mix of ice blue and baal red in the gaps. Build successive highlights by adding more Dheneb stone. Then build up the a brighter highlight on the very edges by adding skull white. The very edges should be a 3:1 skull white ice blue mix. Once thats done, wash the entire thing in a blue glaze, mixed with enchanted blue and ice blue and water. AFTER that, do some more of the brightest highlights, and some very bright highlights of skull white on the edges. Then wash the mouth and claws with baal red and the eyes with thraka green. Finally wash the scales that aren't at the mouth or feet in a mix of 1:1:1:1 enchanted blue, badab black, meridian blue and ice blue.

Then guess what happens?
MORE HIGHLIGHTS!!! Re-highlight with lots more white and ice blue. All other colours are as you would expect.

The Cold One is a Loxatl from the blood pact novels, whereas the skink guardsman is a tarellian dog soldier.

Regarding the gun placement, the description of them in the blood pact novels actually states that their guns are chest mounted, as does the entry for them in (is it?) Dark Heresy. So there's not much I can do about that, unless I change it for the heavy weapons teams. So never mind.
