I'm making some terrain features which involves muddy water and i was wonder whats the best way to colour Vallejo Stillwater so that it looks a muddy brown/red.
Should i...
Paint the the area underneath the stillwater.
Tint the stillwater with a drop of some appropriate coloured ink.
Add a drop of paint to the stillwater
Anyone know the best way to do this?

I plug this a lot but it's worth it:

Magic Water. Add any color you want to it. Paint your areas first, pour it in.

i would use ink if you use paints it will make it thick and look more like mud then murky water adding the right color dust could make comparable effects.

Hey thanks for the links guys. Those secret weapon tutorials were pretty handy. This appears to be the sort of thing that you have to jump right into though, trail and error stuff. I might just have to bite the bullet and play around with different techniques and see which i find works best.

Ok as requested. A pic of my initial messing around with water effects. All colours have been mixed with Vallejo water effects. 1. Vermin brown 2. Vomit brown 3. Dark Angels green or Ork hide shade (glare makes it hard to tell.) 4. Regal Blue 5. Just clear Vallejo water effects 6. Dark Angels green or Ork hide shade 7. Gryphonne Sepia wash 8. Some random black ink i swiped of my brother. 9. Thraka green wash 10. Skull white. 7, 8, 9 and 10 got a white undercoat before i poured the water effects. Looks much better imo.

notice how they are very opaque. if you were to use light ammount of ink or washes instead of paint you would get a much more transparent/lucent looking water effect.

Yeah im working on a crater that im goning to fill with muddy water. So that will give me a larger volume of liquid to work with. But yes less ink/washes sounds like a good step to getting a move convincing effect. Thanks for the tip.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.
If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in. |

Paint the area and then tint the water with a couple drops of artists ink or a bit if wash. If you have the model masterclas book it has a great how to on realistic water using an airbrush.
