I was reading around and seeing what would be useful for 1000 pts Tyrannids...
All units have no modifications (except the Trygon which has been updated to a prime)
Total 997 pts
Tervigon 1
Hive Guard 3
Termagant 25
Genestealers 12
Genestealers 11
Trygon Prime 1
I was thinking 2x Tervigons is overkill at 1000 pts, have Hive Guard to pop transports
the Trygon, not sure if I should spend the points on that or buy wings of gargoyles instead. I would prefer more monsterous creatures but need enough troop choices to capture objectives.

Tervigon is probably the best HQ for 1k games. Toxin/AG/catalyst.
You want a 4th Hive Guard in there, so you can go 2 broods of 2 for split firing.
That's 395 of your 1,000 points. Rest is down to choice. Trygon is a bit overkill for me, but not necessarily a bad choice ...
I have seen 2 tervigon lists at 1,000 points and they can work pretty well.

The best loadout for the tervigon is TS/AG/catalyst. Makes him much better as a support creature.
That unit of termagants is too big really, drop some for the extra 1 hive guard.
The genestealers are good (they always are...) if you wnat more gaunts you could even drop some of them. (not too many or they start to lose effectiveness though).
Trygons can be very good in small points games and prime is a solid upgrade for him.
As above at 1000pts the tyranid codex has a lot of good choices, so pick whatever feels good to you. Again 2x tervigons can work, as at 1000pts not many lists can deal with a sea of gaunts.

I could trade the Trygon for another Tervigon and more gaunts, and a gaunt sea is great but...
1) what happens if I run into land raiders? Will I need a Trygon for that? I know I could squeeze Zoans into a spore, but for one land raider?
2) I knew Catalyst was useful but wasn't sure if it was justified at 1000 points. Not sure which of the Tervigon options are justified at 1000 points except the free cluster spines upgrade

Surprisingly, tervigons can do well against tanks in CC as hits are made on 4+, 6+ without reference to their poor weapon skill. The trygon would also have needed to get into CC to work. Maybe give the tervigon scything talons for 5 points to help here.
Anything armour 12 or less can be taken out by the hive guard.

I have revised the list, the following would make a very good core for a new army but... it seems to lack all the fun options...
Now it is without the Trygon, and with more hive guard and another Tervigon, does this have any huge holes at 1000 points?
