Are you looking for advice on basing materials or colours to paint those basing materials?

There are two really helpful basing tutorials on GW's website which I've bookmarked:

I recommend resin bases on smaller armies that you really want to pop.

So you recommend not basing at all, but rather buying already based bases.

The cheapest way is get a bag of sand from a DIY store Home Depot Lowes. A 5 gallon bucket to hold it in. A bottle of white glue a pill bottle with a dropper. and a dark paint brown or black and a highlight color.
Green tends to look Christmas like.
Use a old brush for this please not a new one.
Paint the white glue on the base be careful around the feet dip the base in the sand knock of any that stuck to the figure let dry.
With the pill bottle put 2 or 3 large squirts of glue and a drop or 2 of dish soap fill with water and mix it up with a stick or brush handle. Shake this before you use it each time.
You should put a note on it saying what is in it as well.
When the glue is dry on the base drip small amounts of the watered down glue on the sand.
This can get messy if you don't watch how much you put on let dry.
Paint the base with your dark color then highlight the sand with the lighter color .

This is from the first link I posted. It's basic sand, basecoated with Chaos Black, drybrushed first with Scab Red and then Mechrite Red.

Why not just used colored sand/ballast to begin with? Those train hobbyists have little tiny sand grain sized rocks of various shades of grey, black, dark red brown and the like.

Seems like a giant waste of time to use regular sand to me.

You still have to paint it, and some of them you still want to add a bit of extra turf and things like that, it just depends on the base. Most resin bases come as resin unpainted.

As for what I would recommend for basing this guy. I think dirt or sand would make him stand out well. I don't think tyranids ever belong on grass. I would avoid red's in the base too.

Maybe something like this

I used ice world bases from this guy for my necrons and love how they turned out still trying to get a good picture with my wash I created to make it look more icelike.

These came from parched earth set and here is the url http://dragonforge.com/Painting%20service/for%20sale/base_sets/sci-fi/parched_earth.htm

Ok, thanks I am not really sure I have all of the supplies to do what sonofruss recomended, but I agree with runmymouth, I dont think a guy like this should be on grass. I might have a mold to make the base flakey like that, and I will try it and post a pic of the out come.

+1

Results are awesome with minimal effort. Good for a large type of army (*cough nids cough*)

Please excuse picture quality, I've only my phone, but you get the idea:

You can get sand from a beach or a playground but with that you want a cheap sieve to clear out anything you don't want glass pet "stuff" ect.
a bag of sand runs about $10-15 a bucket $4-5 a school glue bottle $2 at the most med bottles free, droppers $2-4 or free if you have liquid meds see med bottle wash it first tho.
the bag will last forever i bought mine 4 years ago and haven't dented it

Ok, I could not find a mold, but I am going to try the leaves of a small Pinecone. it is small enough and it should give me a flaky look. Fenrir1997, I have seen that thread before, and it is good fore tyranids, but I already am using this baseing style on my Leviathin sceme.

Hey, good deal. Don't want the armies to be too similar, otherwise you'll get bored.

I'd have to +1 the sand ideas then.

As for molding:

http://www.coolminiornot.com/shop/instant-mold.html

Follow the directions (hot water bath to soften), splat it up against something with an interesting surface (I used a couple rough pieces of granite laying around, cleaned of course), let it cool to harden, then splatter some GS on the mold side and you've got yourself a rough piece of GS that you can now cut out to the shape and size of your base.

Hope that helps.

Whatever you do don't use a base the same colour as your minis, avoid red bases like the plague.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And yes, instant mould is terrific for adding detail to your bases. You can even get a set of resin bases and use IM/GS to replicate the texture throughout the army if you have the time and patience.

Actualy the base is black, but i sprayed m,y model red before I painted him. Saves basecoating all the red!
