I am getting this BFG army mostly from the collecters standpoint, but as long as I'm buying the modles, I might as well make an efective army. I have never played BFG before, so I'm probabley make some stupid mistakes. Here's the list:

Strike Cruiser 145
4 Gladius Class Frigates 180
4 Gladius Class Frigates 180

Total: 505

Not a bad list; you are 5 pts over obviously, but then again your options are a bit limited at 500 pts. Speaking of which, why this game size? It is a bit smaller than average.

I just started small because I'm just starting to collect. The plan was to get one company's navel support, and 500 pts seemed to be about the right level to do that

At 500 points I would take a SM Battle Barge with a Master of the Fleet and one reroll. That's 500 points exactly and legal because one BB is allowed for every 1000 points or part thereof in your fleet. At 1500 points, I take two Battle Barges.

Terrifying until you encounter the escorts who maneuver outside your range and then sit on your ass, shooting you to a slow death. Or a slightly more mobile fleet with more range, who'll also slow murder you.

Not to mention it wouldn't be very fluffy . A battle barge is a bit much for a single company, and I highly doubt any master of the fleet worth his salt would send a 'barge out on independent ops .

I think the thunderhawks would take care of those escorts pretty quickly, what with a single critical hit killing them and all.

And if you look at the arcs, the rear arc is 90 degrees. That means when you go forward 15cm and make a 45 degree turn, one broadside arc or the other is going to include "directly behind" in it. Now you've got a shot at those escorts, and you have at least the same range.

Now if they were just at the edge of range so that when you move you're now out of it, well, that's what burn retros is for!

40k Armies I play:

And I would start out with 2 Strike Cruisers and a couple of Hunters.

Then add a Barge for the next 500pts

and then a third strike cruiser with additional escorts to get to 1500pts.
