Ok as the subject says I havent played Fantasy in about 3 years. I own Daemons and Vampire. Im trying to figure out what the current scene is like. Who are armies or things to watch for. Is it good to hop back in at this time?

The enemy of my enemy is a bastard so lets kill him too.

Of course its a good time to hop back in, VC just came out.

You dont really watch out for armies, but certain units.
Then you have the rest of the not updated armies that are depressing to play with.

You watch out for general and bsb's distance
stead fast
miscasts

everything else is similar enough

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

The rules have changed drastically. Sorry if you liked spamming your Invocation spells and enjoyed your deamons being unbeatable. The playing field is leveled and both your armies took major hits.

Get an 8th edition rule book and play some games.

The competitive scene really is a hodge podge of all the armies. The only army books that are poor are Wood Elves and Brettonians. Brettonians arn't bad per say, its just that Infantry are much more powerful. Skirmishers got severly restricted with the rule changes, that and some of the terrain modifications really hurt the woodies.

Vampire Counts just got rereleased so they are up to speed(just don't look at your one page of magic items. yes, 1 page) with 8th as far as working with the new system.

Daemons and Vampires are now about Mid Tier as for competitivness goes, which is where 80% of all army books are now anyways.

Top Tier would be Lizardmen, Dark Elves, and Warriors of Chaos IMO.

And don't let the word Tier fool you. The difference between top and mid tier is a very fine line. The proper ranking has more to do with individual lists and not books as a whole.

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

8th is a different and vastly move enjoyable beast than 7th. And with new vamps I think you could start anew so to speak without any lingering 7th ed feelings you would get from daemons
