Just started an IG army and I have too many questions. I was looking at Storm Troopers and I was wondering how to use them properly. I thought stuffing them into a Valkyrie might be a good idea since the Grav Shute Insertion rule says it counts as deep striking and Storm Troopers have an ability to re-roll their deep strike if they mess up. Does that rule apply inside the carrier? And if not what would be good to put into a Valkyrie? And how would you put Storm Troopers to good use? Their guns look like their designed to kill marines, so just deep strike them in and hope for the best?

Make a mininum sized squad with two special weapons. Preferably two meltas or two plasmas.

Deep strike them next to a target to kill. Fire everything. Expect to die.

Alternative is to do the above but also buy a chimera for them as they pass the scouts rule (if you take that ability) onto the dedicated transport.

Probably work

This is basically about it. Doesn't make them bad. It just means they're not awesome at everything. I've also outflanked them in a Chimera in an outflank-heavy IG list once. It was probably not worth it, though the look on the guy's face when I suckerpunched his devastator squad was classic.

Again though, it was probably not worth it.

Consensus around here (and I can verify this reliably works) is give them two meltas and deep strike directly behind an enemy tank.
The hot-shot lasguns are alright if they find themselves in a pinch but by that point they've done their job anyway so feth it.

For 105 points (if I remember correctly) you can drop next to a landraider and try to put the hurt on it. I've power whiffed a few times with snake eyes and there goes a killpoint for nothing. But usually they accomplish something. At the least they force the opponent to alter their strategy for a turn to deal with them. If I ever destroy more than one vehicle before getting killed I let you know. At first I hated them because I thought they were grossly disappointing. As long as you remember they are not veterans, are for harrassment, and will die almost every turn after deepstriking, then they have a role. I've never used them for flanking. I have Al' Rahem for that.

Just a quick note on this. GW released an apocalypse datasheet for a stormtrooper-valkkyrie combo that is disgusting. Basically, if I'm reading this correctly, you can pop out of an airborne transport, shoot, move, and shoot again.

If you dump out in rapid fire distance, you can have a potential of more than 120+ str 3 ap 3 shots! (108 plus 12 special weapon shots). And this can be the case for even more stormtroopers.

But that's me being an apoc fiend. Otherwise throw those little guys onto the board via deepstrike and see if you can't manage a few hits

I love the smell of cordite in the morning.

I like Outflanking a 10-man unit and go hunting for Heavy Weapon units like Lootas, Devestators, or Heavy Weapon Teams.

I like the idea of putting them in a chimera at the front of my deployment, scouting them forward 12" then moving 12" disembark and melta something they thought was safe. If I don't get first turn then i'll just deep strike them and let some one else jump in the chimera first turn.

40k is as exciting as riding a pony, which doesn't sound very exciting.......

But the pony is 300 feet tall and covered in CHAINSAWS!

Very nice thread that's not too old. Goes into all sorts of tactics regarding using Kasrkin/Stormtroopers.

Storm troopers are good at delivering that death punch to an enemy unit. It is nice to see people going when a well placed storm trooper squad drops and destroys a HVT. I just
