Thinking about getting a sphess mahreen fleet for BFG

I would upgrade the Strike Cruisers to have extra shields. best 15 pts you'll ever spend.

You might also consider the free option to swap your hangers for the bombardment cannon option. 8 bombardment cannons to the front can really do some major damage.

From the PDFs I have they start with bombardment cannons and can't upgrade shields.

Yes,

You swap the Hanger bays for a Front arc Firepower 5 Bombardment Cannon battery for Free. This is in addition to the 3 dorsal bombardment cannons that are standard.

The 2010 Errata has an updated Dominion fleet list too with all these options.

The extra shield is invaluable. May not seem like much, but it can mean the difference between winning and losing.

It fixes a few glaring issues the system had, including making marine ships decently competitive.

I would use it over the normal one always. Its also 100% official(done by the BFG team that was given management after GW dropped the ball)

With the Bombardment cannon Cruisers I use them as follows.

They will move forward and use their 90 degree turn ability to keep the enemy in their front arc. Preferably at close range.

When you have the enemy in your front arc at close range when he moves to shoot back at you you will end up being abeam of his ships. That is if you had inititive this turn. Yes, you will be shooting at his ships that are abeam of you, but it is best to play defensibly as a Marine. your ships are too expensive to take undue risks.



I would prefer the Apocalpyse class Battleship over the Retribution class as a Venerable Battlebarge because of the Lance batteries. Space Marines have plenty of Weapon batteries, but lack the ability to reliably get hits when they count. Bombardment cannons only close the gap so far. This is especially true once there are tons of blast markers scattered about.

Thats me order the fleet; came to ~£96 for the whole fleet.
I ordered the Apocalypse as the Venerable but it'll be painted up in the chapters colour scheme so i can change it about without too much fuss

Also, the Apocalpse comes with all of the bits you need to model a Retribution class, so as long as you magnetize them you can swap back and forth. True, the prow has a nova cannon sticking out of it, but then WYSIWYG has always been a bit loose in BFG!

I had my first game yesterday with my friends Tau fleet (Their first outing as well) @ 1500 pts

I won 1140 to 960 on VPs just doing a basic fleet engagement: since it was our first game we didn't have and Celestial Phenomenon and similar obstacles.
Summary
The Tau's guided missiles really hurt early game seeing two of my cruisers crippled and one destroyed before reaching an effective range.
Bombardment Cannons really hurt in close range: One cruiser took 5 HP and inflicted 2 crits on his battleship before it was boarded and destroyed.
I didn't manage to pass a single save on my thunderhawks.
Only using my last re-roll did the Nova Cannon hit (On turn 4) and then rolled a one.
In total 7 rolls on the catastrophic damage chart resulted in 4 Plasma Drive Overloads: One of my cruisers was taken out at point blank by Ion Cannons had it's engines explode and take out the ship who killed it.
On the last turn The apoclayse managed to ram an enemy cruiser and I didn't roll anything above a 3

In all it was really fun and a good laugh, despite the fact we forgot several rules.

tau ordinance is really powerful, and if you think guided torpedos are bad wait till you see how many Bombers they can launch.

My bud made a 1500 point Tau list that could have 20 bombers in the air at once.

he obliterated an Ad Mech fleet on turn 2 it was so bad.

He had 5 Ships that could launch bombers but i got really jammy when shooting at them then turrets
