I have a few queries with regard to Night Goblins. Any help will be most appreciated :

- What is the best way to use regular Night Goblin hand-to-hand regiments (numbers, formation and equipment)?
- Is one Spear Chukka enough or would more be necessary?
- How do regular Trolls fare against enemy core choices?
- Are Squig herds an effective unit or are they too unreliable?
- Which provides better support for regular Gobbos, Shamans or Big Bosses?
- Is Skarsnik a good choice for a Lord choice, or is he too costly in points for what he does?

1. I use N. Goblins in blocks of 30 with Hand weapon/shield, nets & a single fanatic, best way I've found for the cost.

2. At least 2 chukkas is needed, you are usually looking for at least a 5 to hit, they are so cheap anyway

3. Trolls are fantastic, I always include 6, they are a good stalemate breaker, and they can crush most normal infantry, against steadfast they may eventually get tied up, but toss in a unit of night gobbos and that wont last long

4. Squig herds are fun, but just too expensive and will get shot up, the secret of night goblins is redundancy, too many crappy units for your opponent to decide what to kill

5. A couple of big bosses give you some much needed oomph in combat, and are really cheap. Consider not even putting in a unit champion and buy a big boss instead, he's 20 points more

6. Skarsnik is nice, but just not worth it, he was ok at 205, at 275 now, he's way too expensive for having basically no armour save, a Warboss w/ Armour of Destiny, Crown of Command & Great Axe has seen me through everytime

All three weapon options have their uses. Vanilla is rather good for an anvil, just throw on Nets and anything S5 or less is going to lose a number of wounds against the Goblins. Add in the 6+/6+ melee save and - while not much - you can weigh down tough units so long as you stay steadfast and within the General's bubble.

Banzaimash wrote:- Is one Spear Chukka enough or would more be necessary?
Always more, at least two and I'd suggest four. They're dirt cheap, however, so you should be able to fit at least three without trouble (roughly 100pts).

Banzaimash wrote:- How do regular Trolls fare against enemy core choices?
You'll need 6-8, and hope that the Fear works unless you are good with dice rolls / are content to use only Vomit attacks. Eight is about the point I'd say they really become effective, unless you plan on running Flanks / hitting "soft" core choices like Halberdiers, Clanrat Slaves, Skeletons, or so-on.

Banzaimash wrote:- Are Squig herds an effective unit or are they too unreliable?
Very effective, I'd say much more effective than Trolls. Immune to Psychology, Hate Dwarves, and put out WS4 S5 attacks at I3. I run a semi-small unit of 9 Squigs 6 Herders, and it never fails to impress. However, as said, it will get shot up if it grows above a certain size, and they lack the durability of some other units (You'll be hoping the enemy randomizes onto the Herders non-stop). I'd rate them higher than Trolls, but bear in mind that they're slightly faster, more fragile Big 'Uns. Very good versus Dwarves, running flanks, fighting slow Monstrous Infantry (who'd have thought that they dislike facing 18-ish S5 attacks before they can strike, often hitting on 3's as well), but otherwise you'll typically charge / receive a charge, drag some down, then explode in the enemy's face.

Banzaimash wrote:- Which provides better support for regular Gobbos, Shamans or Big Bosses?
Big Bosses w/ Great Weapons for active combat resolution, Shamans for debuffs and buffs. Warbosses are more reliable if you want someone killy in your unit, but take up Lord points and are basically buying +1A and +1WS.

Too costly, plus too fragile. Pretty much anything spat at him will kill him, since in close combat 6 25mm / 40mm models or 8 20mm models can dedicate attacks against him without accounting for Spears, Horde, or so on. Add in that he's going to be hit on 4's, only T4, and is pretty much naked, those six wounds won't matter.

I run 60 man units with netters and spears. I start them 10 wide, 6 deep unless I have to tarpit, then after the first round of combat I reform to 5 wide and make the unit not move until I can hammer it with somthing with some teeth.

I also run a 20 man unit with shortbows with full command to use as a bunker behind my lines for my general, BSB and buffing caster to hide in.

Not saying these are the best, just what I have a tendency to run atm. All weapon options are viable, sizes vary on what you want them to do.

- Is one Spear Chukka enough or would more be necessary?

No, I would say 4. 1 is inaccurate and can break, 4 are inaccurate and can break but there will be 4 of them.

- How do regular Trolls fare against enemy core choices?

Trolls are one of the best hording units to crush things. Just use regular trolls, stone and river arn't really worth it. Just keep near your bunker / BSB and general

- Are Squig herds an effective unit or are they too unreliable?

Squig heards are a very effective unt, the amount of attacks these can throw down for so little is ungodly but they are glass cannons.

- Which provides better support for regular Gobbos, Shamans or Big Bosses?

Both. I run a lvl 4 Night Goblin Great Shaman (trying to get all the buffs and debuffs and no damage spells) and 2 lvl 1s Night Goblin Shaman for whatever is left.
You need a Goblin (if going for all goblin, night goblin is going theme) warboss for LD, a night goblin big boss is great for BSB (add banner of disipline for LD boost if in the same unit as general) and I also run 2 night goblin big bosses with GW in each night goblin unit,; they are cheap and are worth their weight in gold in the frail units.

- Is Skarsnik a good choice for a Lord choice, or is he too costly in points for what he does?

I think he may be costly but fun to play with, he (like all goblin generals, if he is going to be your general) needs to stay out of combat for as long as possible.

Night Goblins should have hand weapon for parry save, spear isn't going to win them anything.
nets are very important to help with combat.
unit of 40 atleast, anything less wont survive.

Trolls are decent heavy hitter that is plastic.

Squg herds are nice, especially because they are immune to psychology

shamans are nice, if goblins are weak for everything else, atleast they can have competent casters.
