Pictures were taken using my iphone and a desk magnifying/lamp combo. I was surprised at the quality and resolution. Feedback is appreciated.

Good job, the master of ordinance looks great. I'm not the biggest fan of the super glossy varnish though. The bases look great as well.

They are varnished for durability as I intend on using this army a lot now that I have found a weekly venue to play at. I was always kind of anti varnish but it makes the colors richer and adds a different feel. If I was painting a diorama piece I would not use varnish. Is there a wash you can use post varnish ?

You also have to remember I have 3 very bright lights right on top of the miniatures in these photos so the look super glossy but actually they are'nt.

Have you tried using a matte varnish?

got a brand of matte varnish you can recommend? I have never see any carried if the local hobby stores. I used to use a matte varnish spray, but it dried rough to the touch and the added texture was not what i wanted on my figures.

Try Testors Dullcoat or Krylon Matte Clear. Dullcoat is dead flat and the Krylon is a semi-gloss. I would use a spray can on the Dullcoat as it is a lacquer and if brushed on it will completely destroy your paint jobs. You can also get this in a bottle and thinned down it works great in an airbrush. Krylon is only sold in spray cans.

thanks, I will try the testors spray. I used to use all their products for WWII planes and tanks i used to build. So glad i got away from enamel based paint. Now i guess the next thing i need to figure out is if i can spray the matte finish over the varnished models, or if I have to rebuild up the paint job before hand.


I just tried the Testors dullcoat and it seems adequate. I will post pics later for comparison.

I like the master of ordnance but I think you should move the grenades up to his belt. Or cut off the back half or something, they look a bit... glued on.
