This came from a discussion in WHFB YDMC but I wanted to share this with those who may not have been following that thread.
In essence I took some twine ($3.29 at WalMart) and cut a 6' length of it. On one end I glued a mni magnet, the same many of us have for magnetizing bases. The other end is wrapped around the bottom half of a dart. Inside one of my Empire cannons is another magnet.
So what we have is a piece of string which will magnetically stick inside the cannon and can be used to draw a true path of travel for a cannon ball.
What isn't pictured is a wooden skewer I can use to mark the point where I declare the ball to hit, where it will actually hit and then the dart will be its ending point. Sadly you need a 3rd hand to show how the dowel will work.
