So I have just started my brets, and have 3 ideas for the paint scheme.

1. High Fantasy like they show in the Armybook. Very colorfull and each model may as well be a seperate character. Very time consuming it looks like.

2. Low Fantasy. Less colorful and more uniformed. Think Game of thrones knights. Still diverent colors but its more subdued and dirty.

3. Realistic. Have a friend that has a crusader army. Looks cool, but very uniformed.

I like all three so thats why Im asking for input from the community.

I like the look of a uniformed army, but not necessarily historically/realistically themed. I also never really got into the High Fantasy, as you described above - so my vote would be to do the Low Fantasy.

Have all the knights have a singular tying theme amongst all of them, but have some subtle variation between them all as well. I think that makes the best looking army.

For a unified look that is still very individualistic, just paint all the barding and surcoats the same color scheme. Then the shields and barding insignia can reflect individual heraldry without becoming a total mishmash of color.

I really like Vulcan's idea.

I however have already started a high fantasy style, just added my flavor to it. For my Bretonnians, Green is only allowed on questing and grail knights. My knights of the realm are in "theme color" lances: I have a blue lance (all models blue + one color + one metal), a red lance and a black lance.

I think as long as you personalize what you do, you will be happy with it. Good luck!

I kinda like your realist idea, especially if your thinking about a crusader or knights templar paint scheme, its seem simplistic but colors will pop on the table from a distance.

i have painted mine with bleached bone barding, with all heraldry being green and yellow. blue is my spot color ( ribbons from the ladies!!) knights errant have a two tone, knights of the realm, will have a black fleur de lis, questing knights have the same but they have mud splashed on them (cuz they is dirty) and finally grail knight have white.

only my champions/heros/grail knights have blue on them. i gots the idea from a tub of butter

The correct question is, would I be enjoying this hobby if I did this?

The correct audience is you.

Consider this. Have the unit champion establishes the unifying theme for that unit. Perhaps they all use the same icon such as the axe or the gryphon or the fleur-de-lys but have somewhat different patterns or colors on their heraldry. In this way, each unit becomes more like a lord with his vassels than a mob of skittles and mayonaise.

I definitely think this is the best option. Would a Lord not want his Vassals to all look similar in order to not get confused with the enemy? Thus preventing any chance of friendly fire? I would imagine they would all have a unified scheme with the exception of each knight having his own coat of arms.

I got lazy and just painted all of them the same.

Background? Eh, they're all knights from the same realm.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

I think make them realistic if you can paint Crusader symbols well.
