Iv'e tried a new technique using more drybrushing to get the shading a lot closer to how I would like it.

C&C and suggestions are always appreciated.

Many thanks,

TQ.

I think its had about 5 washes over the course of the painting, and definately one after the final layer of drybrushing hilights.

Hmmmm Have you highlighted It?
Also, If it is not beyond you I would look up Zienthal painting, It can really add some depth to the marines
It looks good!

I think it shows alot of potential mate. I think i know te effect your going for, which if im rite, im tryn for the same thing with my marines. Im doing Crimson fists. The key i found is to make every colour you dry brush a fair bit lighter and brighter than you want. So it gives an almost neon looking version of what you want, then do a badab black wash rite at the end. Just the one wash with my mini's took it down thos the levels i wanted with the creases and resesses i held the darker shade wich gives depth. Finally i do a slight highlight along the sharp edges and pick seems out wich gives overall affect im looking for.

If this makes sense to you cool, but i appologise if its way off the mark of what your trying to achieve!!! None the less keep at it and you'll what wok for you. Since i found badbab black wash my painting skills have improved quite alot. I works well on pretty much any colour and you can always mix it if its going to way to dark.

Something about it just feels.. unfinished to me. It might be the small things like the skull on his backpack being the same color, or that the only things not turquoise being the gun shoulder pads and the small part on the back pack.

As a "standard" squad model it looks fine and a whole squad would be great to see, it does seem to lack depth though.

I really love the detail on the grounded missile though, great work on that.

It reminds me of the marine that was painted in the minimentor speed painting tutorial.
it was like a wash technique that used an airbrush. it had a very similiar finish.
I think your mini looks great for tabletop rank and file troops. to really pop as in individual mini it would need more detail on things like the eyes and some further shading or highlighting.

I think to achieve the look you are striving for, don't drybrush the entire surface. instead only drybrush the point where the light source is coming brom (doesn't always have to be form above)

the problem here is the entire surface is being blasted with high tones from all angles, and that kind of muddies the whole a bit ya know?

you have some very clean work and with some practice and a little patience you will reach your ultimate goal.

also, consider putting some graphic on the shoulder pads, even the water decals will do, gives the eye something to look at.

lastly, think about using a DARK wash over the whole model, it'll fill those recesses a bit and bring the deep edges to light. remember, it doesn't have to be a blue on blue wash. use sepia or devlin mudd.

all in all, I Like your model. the bright blue is refreshing, and its ALWAYS great to see someone putting forth the effort!

(note: i'm no pro at painting either, just techniques I watched others do. look up a channel called "girlpainting" on you tube. she's amazing, love her tutorials.)

Thankyou very much everyone for the suggestions and critique.

I think the biggest things I gotta look at are increased attention to a light source, rather than overall lighting like I am doing now. I'll need to do more deeper washes, and probably need to get some new washes.

Because it doesnt have a chapter, there's no insignia and no identificatory markings. It looks like theres a lot less substance than other models, probably why it looks unfinished.

Finally I think I'll need to pay more attention to the most important details like the eyes, try and get better shading. Ive contemplated using oil paints so I can get a MUCH better setup for wet blending. I find GW paints dry far too fast and wet pallets and I dont mix well.

I wouldn't say that I'm trying to become a GD painter, aint gunna happen But I'd really like to get to as high a standard as I can.

TQ.
