Hey guys,

So I feel like painting something and I thought that maybe I'd paint some LotR models and just give them to my girlfriend.

She's made me some things in the past (embroidery, little stuffed sock-toys, things like that) and this is my only productive hobby, I kind of want to give her something.

She sort of likes Lord of the Rings so I figured I'd paint up Legolas or something. I'm debating throwing in the hobbits from the Mines of Moria set as they are dead cheap to find online.

But, not necessarily relating to my situation, what models have you guys found women tend to 'take to' within this hobby?

When I've shown my gf my own minis, she tends to not be interested in guys with guns (she *really* didn't like guardsmen - though I guess they're a bit boring) but loved anything with large melee weapons (that's what she said) like Grey Knight Strike Squads. As an alien fan, her favourite army aesthetically (from pics I showed her) were the 'nids. Her favourite individual model of mine was a Striking Scorpion - ostensibly 'cos of the chainsword but I reckon the bright green helped. Or am I being incredibly sexist by suggesting that anything vibrant or colourful might get a girl's interest? To be honest, I think that 40k miniatures in themselves probably aren't that appealing - being all violent 'n' all.

Oddly enough, Orks in my experience. The four girls I knew who were into the hobby loved orks. My wife has an ork army, and is resolutely putting top-hats and monocles or bowlers and cigars on most of them.

From personal experience, my girlfriend thinks that space wolves and tyranids look "cute". This has turned into a Hello Kitty Space Wolf Project for me and a few of my friends, one who likes to magnetize things and one who's always wanted to paint a pink army.

My wife leans towards any of the Monstrous Creatures. Doesn't matter if it's 40K or WH. She even points out the models in the Gaming Shop.

Short answer, hello kitty marines or pink crons.

Ok, in all seriousness I'm not incredibly sure. I mean, let me see, Legolas might be a stereotype? I suppose there is not many alternatives. I would think the likes of saint Celestine or the Sanguinor wound cut it.

My daughter (10) wanted to start, and, what did she pick, Orks. I think for 40K it is either orks or nids as what I have seen more of.

Girls are individuals and can't be defined as one large group. She's your girlfriend, you should know what she likes far better than some voice from the internet.

My mom thinks dreadnoughts are really cool, and when I explained what exactly a dreadnought was, she thought it was even cooler. She liked my daemon prince when he was all shiny pewter too.

the runious powers have a hold over her, bwuahahaha.

I've managed to hide my hobby from girls, although I had some terminators lying around the house when one of them was over, and they thought it was pretty neat.

Admittedly she wasn't painted, but I did show her my Saint Celestine and her reaction was 'meh'. She likes SoB armour but thinks they're sexist

As I said, this isn't really an appeal, ideas are welcome ofc, but I was more interested in what other women had liked. With my gf specifically, I just remembered that she thought Arwen looked 'stunning' in the movies, so that model of her on horseback might do me nicely. A couple of gaunts could be cute too.

Why hide it? I've given girls painting lessons

Though I guess if you were to then ask me 'did you then get with them?' there would be an embarrassing silence...

Bah.

Id stick to just one model, that way if shes not that keen she only has one to hide! You can spend extra time time on it too rather that batch painting anything.

Does she like any tv shows or other films that might have models? cmon has a great "buffy" model for example.

My wife loves her Dark elves and has a fine appreciation for a buddy of mines dark eldar and wood elves. She also has a somewhat twisted appreciation for my word bearers as my defiler still has the little pink plastic pig she put in it's claw. So basically anything elvish or evil. Not quite sure about what that says about my wife...

I really don't know what to say about the fuzzy pink land raider........................it's..........................different. But it that's what she wants then that's cool.

I had to "test" my wife just to see if the info in my earlier post still stood.

I am currently building a Skaven army for WH. I showed my wife the codex and the various pictures of the Doomwheel (That would hurt was her reaction), the Plague Furnace (That's neat was about as far as it went), and the Screaming Bell (Now I like that one better). I then showed her the kit I have of the Hell Pit Abomination (That's Totally Cool!!!!!!).

Yep, it's monstrous creatures all the way for her.

Ok, back story, I am married and love life, my wife does not play 40k but she is open to gaming in general. She tried LotR but then all the player base died off so she put some of the models in her curio cabinet next to her little fine china dolls. Other than those few models she really doesn't touch anything that has to do with games workshop.

That being said. A long long time ago in a gal... wait wrong story...

Before our first real "Hey I am interested in you as more than just friends" date we use to hang out from time to time, one day she just wanted to go where ever I was going to go that day just to get out of the house, I told her she would be bored to tears but she insisted so she went along to the game store, I was in a league and had to play that night. She sat there, she read a book while i played my game, she hated it cause "...there are guns and it is futuristic..." But afterwards she knew from talking to me when I went to the game store it was more about the social stuff than the games... So she knew I would sit around and paint my "...little army men..." and talk to the guys. Apparently this is what she wanted to see. She listened in and participated in the conversation when it was more than just talking about the rules. I was painting when the conversation had a lull she decided to ask about the painting and how it worked, I grabbed one of her hands and started painting her nails the different colors as me and the guys told her about panting.

Ok but Uncle Bexy that's a long boring story... Later after we were engaged but before we were married she let me know it was that night that she decided I was "boyfriend material."

I guess long and short of it is don't try to push the hobby down a girls throat but at the same time if she shows interest don't try to keep it bottled up away from her. Also maybe let her focus on other parts of your hobby, like the social interactions with the other gamers.

The wife still comes with me to the game store some times, and sometimes even goes when I am not there (she is into D&D.) She doesn't play 40k but understands it is something I really enjoy...

Doesn't matter what model, so long as it is painted pink.

Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee.

I agree, my girlfriend has dark eldar (for anything bird related, flocks, scourages, wyches (which she attached kroot heads to their shoulders and backs because they look bird like trophies and vehicals) but she LOVE orks, she says they are 'cute'.

Me and a few of the guys I work with are deployed and have ordered some 40K stuff to play games with. One of the armies was Orks. Some of the girls at work have asked what they were and wanted to help paint them. The ladies seem to like Orks.

On a side note...this is my 69th post.

Never thought to buy a woman a GW model before.

But in my general experience of buying presents for women I would suggest she would prefer any model you like, but with a receipt.
