Yep, there's another thingy trying to kill the Internet. Gah, why do all politicians have to be old amish racist sexists? (Yes, I know this is an exaggeration, but you'd be surprised how much the average politician has in common with an old, racist, sexist amish farmer)
In any case I did my duty in fighting SOPA and PIPA (Huzzah for sending e-mails and shizzle to politicians and yelling at people who supported it in RL) but who should I e-mail/yell at to fight ACTA? Thanks.

"[The president] shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur"
The Senate is required to approve any Treaties. I don't think they've voted on ACTA. Send a letter to your Senator if you don't like the treaty.
edit:WTF...well, apparently the President doesn't think he needs Senate approval of this treaty. Another one for the list.

Well, Obama just lost my vote. How the feth could he fight SOPA and PIPA but support ACTA? He makes us democrats look bad. Le sighhhhhhhhhh.
The main problem with ACTA AFAIK is that it's so damned secretive... course we'd probably have otherproblems if it wasn't...

The EU commission responded to accusations of secrecy:
It is alleged that the negotiations are undertaken under a veil of secrecy. This is not correct. For reasons of efficiency, it is only natural that intergovernmental negotiations dealing with issues that have an economic impact, do not take place in public and that negotiators are bound by a certain level of discretion. However, there has never been any intention to hide the fact that negotiations took place, or to conceal the ultimate objectives of the negotiations, the positions taken in European Commission Trade 5/6 the negotiations or even details on when and where these negotiations are taking place. The EU and other partners (US, Japan, Canada, etc.) announced their intention to start negotiations of ACTA on 23 October 2007, in well publicised press releases. Since then we have talked about ACTA on dozens of occasions, including at the European Parliament (INTA committee meetings), and in numerous well attended seminars. Commission organised a stakeholders' consultation meeting on 23 June in Brussels, open to all – industry and citizens and attended by more than 100 participants. US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and other ACTA partners did the same. [source]
So basically "it's secret, but we don't give a gak what you think about that, neener neener neener!". They've still not actually released the fething thing for public scrutiny, so it's still secrecy no matter how much the politicians want to lie and claim otherwise.

The argument used to sign it was that the president can enter into agreements if they only change things he has direct authority over as the executive.
Googling around, it looks like a lot of legal experts have problems with this argument.

Don't worry fellow Americans! With new anti-terrorism bills those naughty legal experts can be whisked away and detained indefinitely! LONG LIVE AMERICA!
For the treaty itself, all we've gotten are leaked copies of certain parts of the treaty on wikileaks.

You're right, I was looking at another article from the same site.

Well, the text is easy enough to obtain, its any kind official statement that's difficult to find. Which isn't encouraging, but then these kind of executive agreements aren't really all that rare and I have no more faith in random tech blogs than I do the White House.
I didn't read it closely, but it looks to me like its just "We agree to have and enforce copyright law at our discretion."

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.
If they cant shut down all the nonces on the internet, why are you concerned they will actually be able to do much of anything with all the laws in the world.?
