The War film is a staple of the film industry, it covers a serious subject in ever increasing amounts of gore and brutal reality. However what most people who have served in any military will tell you, there is the midst of all this craziness often moments of comedy. Often surreal, black comedy that keeps morale up.

There are few war films that capture the essence of this, I think this clip is my all time favourite.

EDIT: Please remember the Dakka rules. Embedding video or linking images containing profanity is just as much a violation as posting profanity. Worse in some ways because it evades the filters. Linking is fine, but remember the NSFW tag. -Mannahnin

It pretty much encapsulates SNAFU. Anyone else got any contendors?

It must be a War film, any period is fine!

EDIT - It didn't even register that would breech the rules! Sorry. Too much time on 1d4Chan....

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest!

Not a big fan of war films but I have watched a few from the 60s/70s back when they could get the actual machines used and the Germans all spoke German

I thought the 60s/70s was the era when they didn't care about accuracy and Patton tanks doubled for everything because they didn't have the vehicles. German tanks especially are fairly rare outside of museums. It's only in more recent years that they have started trying to put serious effort into using realistic vehicles with mixed results.

Anyway, I bit I always find a bit misplaced is in the original version of Sahara with Humphrey Bogart. An otherwise serious film, but when one guy is wounded his mate helps him into a building, he lies him down and says something like "Don't worry, you'll be okay" and the wounded man says "That's all right, it'll take more than that to kill me!". The film immediately cuts to outside the building where you hear a mortar whistle shortly before the building is blown to smithereens.

John Frost (who worked on Bridge Too Far as a consultant) says that the "surrender" scene is frankly a load of tosh, and he was quite grumpy that it got put in. It is, nevertheless, a very cool scene.

"There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious—makes you so sick at heart—that you can't take part. You can't even passively take part. And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all" Mario Savio

The whole of Dr Strangelove to me is both absolutely comedy and absolutely terrifying. We came so close....
