ok so skimming through the forms for a good Idea to restart my High Elves I notice that in each list they have a Lv4 Archmage... in a 2k game against... well anybody... would taking a prince be a bad Idea? or is it just when people play high elves there's some unofficial rule that the army's general MUST be a spellcaster... cuz I want fighty elves

You can go fighty. The issue is not so much with High Elves, but of the meta/community overvaluing spellcasters because of the new magic.

You can make a combat-oriented High Elf Prince/force, that said, you'll need to work it harder and more precisely. But it's viable.

I like a prince with that item that makes him a lvl 1 and then you give him death. Other than that the prince is not all that great

would I need to get him a mount for that to be viable?

I mean I would give him the ring (a spell warrior is kinda my soft spot...)

but would I also need to give him survivability (idk how much the ring costs but I want my +2 armor and +4 Ward save thank you)

How much does it cost for that armour upgrade? By the time you get there it would be far more worthwhile to just get a level 4 archmage.

Isn't the point that he dosn't want to tae a lvl 4 mage?

If you go on Ulthuan.net, there is a guy who goes by the name of Seradin, he uses a calvary prince and is very successful. You just have to tool your army for it. I used to run one in a group of dragon princes, bsb, and a lv 1 or 2 beasts mage. Couple of items off the top of my head

Crown of command
-1 to shooting item
Banner that makes all terrain regular

Maybe banner of the world dragon.

Its a lot of fun, but takes time to master

The problem with combat princes etc in HEs is that our special choices offer the same amount of killyness for for less points.

For instance whitelions in horde formation can get 6 ST6 attacks into the same amount of frontage for 90 points, That is three more attacks then a prince as well as 3 more wounds.

The only real use I have found for combat princes/lords is coming up with amusing combos of items to make them fill a specific role.

Damn I cant wait to the GW legal team codex comes out now there is a dex that will conquer all.

kinda sad cuz I wanted my army to be lead by a warrior not a mage... (a mage-warrior type character would also fit my fancy... I just want him to be those heroic generals you see in a movie)

might use a dragon army though... those dragon princes are seriously jaw dropping amazing when you use them right...

Dude if that is your vision for your army then bloody well do it. Unless its a tournament setting I see no reason not to run what you want to run,yes its not optimal but you just learn to make it work (and with the new VCs the meta will change magic weapons will come into vogue again) I run a dragon sometimes in my HEs its a horrible stupid choice but damn the model is pretty and its fun to field .

Prince on star dragon with armour caledor, vambraces of defence, halbard and the item that gives character and unit magical attacks

I used him in a 2500 point army.

Stick him out on a flank, absolutely slam any opposition there and then there is a raging monster mash rolling down the opponent's flank.

Princes on Dragons (or griffons) can tear through units. However, the prince needs a ward save or he will go down.
The problem is that a tooled-up prince on a monster cost a huge amount of points; somewhere around 400-500. If he gets bogged down with large units of goblins or clanrats, you'll be wasting a lot of points.
However, used right, princes can be excellent.

For we are the Asur, the true kin of Aenarion, and Ulthuan shall never fall!

Instead of an archmage use 2 or more mages.

I have had some nice success (surprise helps) running a prince on a dragon, or fielding a Dragon prince list with around 30 Dragon Princes, you just ahve to learn how to play the model and learn the strategies. Most lists have a Level 4 archmage because its is easier to work with.
