Thousand Sons Battleship wandering the galaxy...

I've been involved in 40k up to now, so can anyone give me suggestions on what fictions to buy/read for a good start on Warhammer Fantasy?

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.

'She sat on the corner, gulping the soup down, uncaring of the heat of it. They had grown more watery as of late she noted, but she wasn't about to beggar food from the Imperials or the "Bearers of the Word." Tau, despite their faults at least didn't have a kill policy for her race.'

Warhammer rulebook and the army books. Then you should get the Time of legend book series or what ever its called. And I think you have written your sig wrong. I dont think an Ethereal would speak of the emperor.

As much as I love Warhammer 40000 and all of it's awesomeness and grim darkness - I must here say Clone Commandos would won the day.

Brother Coa speaking against the imperium!?
This can't be unless....Alpharius, is that you?

No, the Ethereal was telling Thule that his purge is pointless since Kronus is Tau territory. Didn't help him though, the Blood Ravens still burned the Tau capital on Kronus to the ground, and filled the Ethereal and his bodyguard full of bolter rounds, or in my case, storm bolter rounds. But thanks for the advice.

What sort of things do you want from an army? Lots of Magic? Lots of Artillary?Cavalry? Are you wanting an "easy" army of do you want a challenge?

I'd look at the GW site to see what ones you like the look of, then find some Youtube Battle Reports. Go to a gamestore and see if they'll let you have a few demo games..

Since I'm not ashamed to be an Imperium (Space Marine) fan, I want an equivalent from Warhammer Fantasy.

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. Try the Witch Hunter series:
The Ambassador Chronicles:
The Sigmar series(Emperor):
Mark of Damnation:
and many more. Stick to books with the Empire in it if you want an Imperial feel.

By space marines do you mean a small elite army? And if so are you looking for hitting power or armour saves?

Just like Space Marines would mean jack of all trades master of none army...failing that an Imperial Guard-style army would be fine...

There is no Space Marine like Fantasy army. The next closest thing is Empire which is like Guardsmen but the circles of Knights are like Space Marines, the Warrior Priest are like Chaplins. The Wizards act like Librarians. There are some eliteness in the Empire but no way near as close as their Warhammer 40k counterparts the Space Marines.

Looks like Imperial Guard-style it is then.

From what you have said you are looking for the Empire is a good place to start looking. They have the can do anything list, and if you wanted you could specialise from there.
The basic troops do have the garden feel to them too, with the knights being the elite there to lend a punch at the right place, at the right time

Empire would be fitting. With lots of knights and chaplains. Why not even have a war altar to smash the filthy heretics from?

Empire really is jack of all trades as they can play in every phase fairly well.

If we concentrate on the SM's as a small, tough, elite force that can overcome the enemy through sheer firepower and martial prowess, Warriors of Chaos and Dwrfs also fit the bill.

Very good armour, high leadership, high WS, awesome magic (WoC) /shooting (Dwarfs)...they seem to fit the bill as far as I can see. Obviously, we have to get over the chaos/xeno thing...but they fit as well as Empire IMO.
