Or

The first is a 30s Soviet armored car, the second a british gun tractor, looking for a suitable IG transport vehicle.

I'd say it depends on which regiment you have. For most of them, I feel that the british tractor is the best option since it looks sturdier and more in line with the rough 40k imagery. But if you field Praetorians or another one of those flimsy regiment, then the soviet car might look better with its curved fenders and thinner wheels.

part of the problem is I'm thinking of 2 ideas, 1 is transports for my arbites army, for that the soviet one is the win, but for other IG the brit truck is the win.

The nazi thing is kewl but looks too realistic for a proper 40k vehicle.

Anyone ever seen or done concept art for what a 40k truck or car should look like? The old mutant chronicles RPG (which became warzone which became dead) had some good stuff.

Just about any 1930's Russian armored vehicle is perfect for IG. The entire BA series of armored cars is great too, I'd honestly say go with a BA-6 or BA-10 over the BA-64...... the dual rear axles and bigger turret just make it look more IG.

I think Eastern Express makes kits of them both.

I gotta vote for the bottom one. I think that it is because it looks much more angular than the above one. Helps keep with the sharp edges of the rhinos, chimeras, and landraiders of the imperium.

I actually think the opposite. The top one is a turreted
chimera. The bottom one is the armored rhino.

Standard guard doesn't need armor. It needs guns. Top.

ESDK made, basically a 1960s US army truck for his catachans, an incredible scrachbuilt but... it's a realisitic historical army truck. A tamiya model would do the same job.

I'm looking for wacky vehicle that while they may have really existed don't look right.

the brit truck up there is the sort of think I'm looking for, the russian pennyfarthing bicycle/tank we see from time to time is another one.

One frosty Nebraska night, the BA-20 and the Quad imbibed an excess of peppermint schnappes. They awoke from their funk of two days to find the sun high in the sky, the trailer awash with illegitimate WWII armoured cars and a repo man boosting the Chevy. American armoured cars, British armoured cars, British scout cars, German Sd.Kfz.222 and Italian AB-41, oh my!

I'm partial to the Sd.Kfz.222 and Daimler MkII:

Here are the BA6 and BA10:

...neither of which have bodies as comely as the BA-64 or Sd.Kfz.232.

The nazi thing is kewl but looks too realistic for a proper 40k vehicle.

A little plasticard and putty should chunkify things nicely.

Hmmm found a new site that has more of the products I was actually looking for (backpacks and helmets).

there's this

this

and that

I'd need a better picture the but british one seems to be most imperial though the American one looks bizzare enough to belong in 40k

Why not use a M3 half-track or the German hal-track looking about the same..? Half-tracks are ded ´ard and propa´.

Again any halftrack looks too historiical and crosses that invisibil line between "here's a cool model I'm using" and "@##%$ this I'm just using historical models"

I've always loved the Brit/canadian gun tractor, and think it would make a fine rhino/repressor.
The Russian vehicle feels more IG than arbites to me, but would also work.
So would most of the armored cars pictured.

If this is for an Arbites army, I have to agree with Construct. Go with smaller German or American Armoured Car. One AC he didn't mention is the M20, which was an American Recon AC. Have you considered WW2 German halftracks? There are a lot of HTs in the Gaunt's Ghosts series (both IG and Blood Pact) and I got the distinct impression they resemble SdKfz HTs. I've bought a few from Tamiya (for Traitor Guard) and they are very nice models.

Out of curiosity what model scale works best w/ 40k? 1/72 seems small to me (from memories of old 1/72 kits I had) - I guess 1/35 would be the appropriate size?

Sossorck: Actually 1:35 is a bit large. The closest most model companies make is 1:48, but that is a bit small. 28 mm is actually about 1:53 (give or take a bit). Of course if you go with a scaled model you must realize that any gun on it is going to seem incredably small compared to the 40k version, but that is a rant for a different thread...

Kid: I am with Construct, I like the German Sd.Kfz.234. and you won't even have to modify the main gun to make it look like a mlti laser.

IMHO using a GW or ForgeWorld (Repressor!) vehicle is the way to go.
No matter how much time you spend on another kit they just wont look right.

... but, as I have made a few attempts myself I do have a suggestion (WIP-pics):

Kendoka: I like your idea about the Repressor, but IMO $28 is WAY too much to spend on a kit that isn't 'technically' official outside of Witchhunters (not to mention the fact that, to get the rules for it, you have to spend another $20 on Imperial Armour). Though, the JDF LAV is a good choice, where did you get those wheels?

I'd definately prefer to use the Sd.Kfz.222 as a sentinal. Use it for recon... damn that'd be sweet. Any one got the price of one of those bad boys?

Shattered Soul: Well (technically) you couldn't use an SdKfz as a Sentinel because sentinels use the Walker rules, whereas an SdKfz would use the vehicle rules. You could use one as a Hellhound or Chimera though. As for SdKfz's they can range in price from $.99 to $25

Don't you think a salamander would be a little more appropriate?

A salamander is a valid option as well. I usually don't think of non-codex vehicles...
