I am looking to base my space wolves and think that a slick rock base with a bit of snow/water (secret weapon glass snow!) would really make them pop. The models are already based so sadly I will have to work around that, but I think it's still doable. What I have in mind is to use a smooth textured basing product like the valejo smooth pumice and then use pigments to build the color. Knowing what someone else has done would help me immensely. For those of you who do not know what "slick rock is".

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bump? I realize the texture is going to be damn near impossible to achieve. Im thinking of just using a plaster/sand type of puddy (valejo) and smoothing on 2 or 3 layers just to achieve some faint lines. The color and pigment techniques are what is beyond me. Would I be better off painting? What I like about pigments is the texture quality of it. Any advice?

I've done it. I made the basic shape with milliput then I put pva all over and put the finest sand available over that. It turned out great, looked like a sandstone rock formation. The sand I used was some colored sand used for children's crafts, I got it at micheals. It's more like a powder its so fine. I then painted it to look like sandstone.

I'm not sure why the pics are so small, hopefully you can see them well enough. Otherwise you can check out my threads, these photos are in " barracuda flying base - opinions?" Thread I posted a while back.
