So after the 36,000 point apocalypse game found here, a few of us decided to make a campaign of sorts, as well as a few gaming tables. This is the result of our playtest of a mission for the aforementioned campaign, which we found to need work. As the apocalypse game resulted in a Xenos win, it was decided that they'd established a beachhead and were moving on to secondary targets (such as a comms array). This resulted in the Imperium defending said array, with Xenos attacking on the second half of the turn. Now, as we were kinda ad-libbing things as we went, the following rules took place on the table: The wooden planks were trenches, and treated as a 3+ cover save to reflect that. The black styrofoam circle would be the intended target, a communications array. There were 4 structure points at AV 13 to crack, and the xenos would win. The blocks/etc were area terrain or silos, but generally became unimportant. Next time we use this table, there should be some semblance of progress made.

Deployments:
Imperium

Xenos

I (The Ork player) roll to seize the initiative, and get...

Lucky dice rolls for the xenos would be a growing trend this game. Also pictured, the saddest vindicare on the planet.

So, we go straight into...XENOS TURN ONE .

All Ork vehicles move out, with the trukks going flat out with the intent of alpha striking for the Mek and Zogwart in the wagons. Tau firewarriors rush forward, as well. During the shooting phase, that pesky vindicator gets shot to bits by the Lootas, and his other assassin taking a wound. Broadsides wound the Dreadknight, and the ion cannon manages to splat a purifier in the trenches. Naturally there were no assaults possible, but Tau jump forward if able to.

GREY KNIGHTS TURN ONE
This is where Murphy's Law kicks in...after losing the initiative to the xenos, BOTH land raiders (on either side of the table) immobilize themselves in the trenches. Lascannon shooting at the big mek's wagon fail to hit--all three of them--and a plasma cannon shot on the tau rolls a . The saving grace of this round was a turbo pen shot into an exposed trukk (within KFF range) that wrecked it--as they moved flat out that turn, the occupants could not bail out and were killed. Shots at the firewarriors are saved by cover.

You will not be forgotten! Okay, so you probably will.

XENOS TURN TWO

The lone Kopta and some melta crisis suits come in from reserves, however the latter deepstrike mishap and get placed on the back of the field as the kopta sputters behind enemy lines(as to why I only took one Kopta--I had pretty much everything I wanted, with a few extra points aside. It worked, I guess). Everything moves forward that needs to, without going flat out this time. Shooting from one loota squad at the 5-man purgation squad kills off FOUR of them, with the applicable cover saves. Murphy's Law STRIKES AGAIN! Sadly the kopta was not as lucky, as he rolled a one to hit rear armor with his rokkits, Both times.

At this point a 'stop-gap' was enacted...finding themselves taking massive casualties, an extra D6x100 points of GK arrive next turn, responding to a distress call. 200 points answer the call. It's both fair (to me, anyway) and allows us to adequately playtest this scenario. Also makes sense, in a way. In the future if it's enacted, they will have to arrive via deepstrike, taking a transport if necessary. Although looking back, it should probably only be if they lose the initiative? I dunno, let's discuss that.

IMPERIUM TURN TWO
Dreadnaughts on the left side move forward, as does the Dreadknight. Guys in the LRCs stay tight. Fire from various units explodes the mek's transport, killing 3 while psycannon fire kills 5. The nearby LRC fires on them, killing one. Seven more die from more shooting as the warsmith unit shoots and explodes the Tau's railhead. The orange firewarrior squad in front is ripped into, taking 80% casualties. Shooting at the lone Kopta wounds it once. No assaults are made.

All that remained of the mek's unit.

One! Is the loneliest number you can do...two can be just as bad as one WHEN YOU'RE STARING AT PISSED OFF GREY KNIGHTS

XENOS TURN THREE

At this point I make a tactical blunder--moving through cover finds them an inch shy of the relative safety of a trukk (the boyz inside would have been kicked out for them). My logic is that, even behind cover they're still within range of enough bad things for them to be whittled away--and by moving backward they'd pull more enemies at the (soon to be) unprotected vehicles. So, he charges forward! Suprisingly, the 2-man firewarrior passes morale and continues on! The firewarriors to the ork's left side march forward, finally within rapid fire range of the GK's troops, and kill off one purifier. The right most loota squad opens fire on the melta dread, getting three shots each. A few cover saves later, it's wrecked. A total of 6 firewarrior squads open fire on the GK lines, killing 2 purifiers and the last purgation member. In assault, the kopta fails to damage the remaining dreadnought (only stuns it) in its path and gets squibbed in return. C'est le vie.

IMPERIUM TURN THREE
The floodgates open, and both LRCs let slip their occupants into the fight. The squad on the right jogs forward to the orks in the open, seeking to engage them. The dreadknight warps behind the ork convoy, looking to inflict massive damage.

Warsmith shots at the remaining wagon fail to hit, letting the multi-melta on the nearby immobilized LRC stun it. A lascannon shot destroys a shield drone from a crisis team, and take a wound from storm bolter fire. Shadowsun (standing behind the Army of Two firewarrior team) loses her shield drones and takes a wound. Adding insult to injury, the Army of Two becomes the squad of one. He rallies, however, and sees the nearby paladins incinerate 7 firewarriors from another squad. In close combat, the remaining warriors are wiped. The mek's boyz are assaulted and ran through.

XENOS TURN FOUR

The remaining vehicles run forward, however luck turns against them--the lead trukk immobilizes itself on the trench, and the boyz spill out. The remaining firewarriors keep shuffling forward, as does the mishap'd melta team now near the dreadknight. While Shadowsun fails to do anything to the nearby dreadnaughts with her meltas, missile pods from the wounded crisis teams wreck one and immobilize the other. Three squads (if you include the Lone Warrior) manage to take down Crowe. Zogwart failed to squig him beforehand, sadly. Even after rolling 1's for shots, two loota teams bring down the Dreadknight close by. In a suprising turn of events, the deff dread assaults the nearby paladins. One dies, but he loses a DCCW. Combat continues!

IMPERIUM TURN FOUR

Payback in a small way begins, as interceptors shunt forward--behind the massive firewarrior group. Stern arrives via deep strike, next to a squad of Lootas. Things are looking bad during the shooting phase, as the orks are without their happy KFF bubble. The warsmiths crack open a trukk of boyz as Zogwart's wagon is melta'd apart. The heavy bolter on a nearby rhino does work, and explodes another trukk. 8 boyz die from the explosion. Stern only kills off one Loota with shooting. The interceptors psyfle into a FW squad, breaking them with one fell swoop. The ork squad that bailed out of their immobilized trukk are assaulted and kill off two purifiers, losing three in the process. They fail morale and are wiped, losing their LD check by one. The deff dread and the paladins both whiff air in assault, doing nothing to either party.

XENOS TURN FIVE

Zogwart's squad shuffles forward at the nearby grey knights as the last remaining trukk flies past, sufficiently driving through the trench. They don't get out, however, setting up for a good turn 6 (if applicable). Firewarriors rapid fire the interceptors to death, and crisis suits melta away the last dreadnaught. Lootas unceremoniously kill off Stern, and Zogwart fires off a Frazzle! shot. Onto his own squad, killing one boy.

Hello, my name is Zogwart and this...is Jackass.

In assault, the dread loses his other arm without giving wounds to the grey knights. He simply refuses to die. Zogwart's unit charges forward as hammerhand is activated and patiently waits for the paladins to hit him first, taking three wounds and dishing out none in return. Leadership is made, however, and combat continues.

IMPERIUM TURN 5
Shooting at the three remaining boyz near the Inquisitor's retinue kills all but the nob, making the squad suffer through plasma, storm bolter, lascannon, and melta fire. Melta fire explodes the last trukk 5 inches, killing 5 ork. A crusader, 2 acolytes and a warsmith die in the flames as a heavy bolter pick apart two more boyz. A LRC wounds a crisis suit, but fails to kill off them. In assault the remaining boyz are wiped up by the immolated inquisitor squad. Zogwart's mess kills 4 and takes 3 wounds, but the combat continues.

At this point, the game was called. It was getting late, and the nearby Tau were itching to assault the Knights. Now you might have remembered the beginning objective for the Xenos--to kill off the comms relay. But, I didn't include that in the report...why, you ask? After the broadsides got close enough, it was a mere pittance to take them off the map. Learning seems to have occurred, however. When it actually matters, the communicaton array will get its share of void shields and a few other goodies, including a displacer beacon.

What do you think, Dakka? What else can improve the scenario I presented?

It was a good match. My luck just sucked though. I am happy though I was able to chew through some orks at least.

Very nice, just one note. When you immobilize a vehicle that went flat out to destroy it the passengers are not killed (I am talking about the Ork Trukk in this case).

Per the latest BRB FAQ:
Q: If a transport vehicle is destroyed in a Movement
phase in which it has moved flat out, what happens to
any embarked models, as passengers may not
disembark from a vehicle that has moved flat out in
that Movement phase? (p70)
A: They are removed as casualties.

Reread that, if it is destroyed in a movement phase in which it moved flat out - not in an opponents shooting phase. Also, note that the full text refers to disembarking that turn (which refers to player turn not game turn).

Also, both Frazzle and Zzap!! hit the targeted unit automatically, meaning Zoggy could not have hit his own boyz. If in CC, 1, 2, or 3 just gives Zogwart Power Weapons for the round.

But an interesting game! Amusing that the Land Raiders immobilized themselves- keep forgetting that vehicles like that do indeed have weaknesses that Orky vehicles don't, and vice-versa.

GENERATION 8: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

If yer an Ork, why dont ya WAAAGH!!
