Yes ive finally decided to dive into 40k for real this time. I sold all my old collections and have bought myself afew boxes of space marines to get me started.
I won't be playing any games till after ive finished building and painting a good sized force first though.

I bought the Space marines codex, the battleforce, a Venerable dred and a landspeeder storm and a captain just to get started. I'll be buying afew more units along the way but for now im going to model and build up what i have. Now im still pretty much a noob when it comes to the rules even though ive bought and collected warhammer for about 7 years lol I hope i judged it right by first giving the scout squad all shotguns.

Its strange having never even considered space marines as they looked alittle boring but after trying everything else turns out im really liking their look right now.

What Chapter are you going to go with?

Well im not too sure yet, going to give the codex a proper read through but possibly Salamanders or blood ravens.
Or just make my own.

I'd love to see a fellow Salamanders player. If you do go that route, I'd recommend converting your Vulkan rather than using the off-the-rack model. (He looks a little thick and cluttered for my tastes.) Salamanders will offer you the special character (who has a pretty sweet ability) as well as a color scheme dominated by one of the easiest colors to paint. Also, unlike Blood Ravens, you can find some pretty tasty Salamanders stuff on Forgeworld. We have a Blood Ravens player hereabouts, and he gets a lot of eye-rolls over his army choice. I don't know if that's typical, but there you go.

Good to hear someone else is considering Salamanders. I my self jumped from Dark Angels to Salamanders a while ago and not looked back since.

As general Advise for starting an army. Every troop choice you buy (so tactical marines and scouts), get a transport with them. That way, it saves you painting up 3 Rhinos at the same time (which i will end up doing ).

Yeah the salamanders do seem pretty interesting for space marines and the colors are quite nice too.

And thanks to the battleforce i have a rhino to transport some marines and I also have the landspeeder storm for the scouts. I just wonder what to add next.

Well, in terms of what to get next, captains aren't great in terms of what the bring to the game. Maybe a Librarian will be a good HQ choice to get for starters.

Librarian, Tactical squad, Rhino, Scouts, LSS is a great start for a 500 point game. you can build up adding and removing as you go.

After that, probably some Armour.

Just something for you to know, once you get off the ground with 40k I highly doubt you'll be using a Land Speeder Storm for very long. They are useless in bigger games as are scouts unless you use scouts as objective holders.

If you want to do Salamanders, you'll need to get ahold of a Vulkan fig at some juncture. Personally, I'd get another tac squad and a rhino to go with them. Once you have that, you can't go wrong with assault terminators (with hammers, of course) and a Land Raider to pimp around in. (I'd recommend the Crusader, but Land Raider flavors are highly subjective.)
