Water and patience.

Mix a little water into your gold, and apply it thinly. Then build it up. I used to do exactly the same thing, but it pays to take it slow.

Personally, I go for 2/3 coats of shining old, then a light black wash, then burnished drybrush, followed by 50/50 mithril/burnished gold highlight.

I like it, it looks super clean. The only suggestions I'd have is to thicken out the omega on the pauldron. You did a great job of making it look sharp and clean but it would look much better if you were able to make it more stylized.
