Any chance of doing some black lining over it ?
it'll be perfectly fine with that.

I guess so, like going over it with a pigment pen.
Aslong as the black line is straight, it should be able to give.... a 2 mm correction ( from both sides )
if the red line isnt 100% straight.

Painting freehand onto models gives them a much different look than decals do. I prefer it over decals as well, but that's a personal choice.
Freehanding can be tough to know where to start exactly and how to go about it, but it's much easier than you think.
The whole trick is breaking down your image into manageable shapes and then combining those.
I'm going to give you a few of my links from what I've learnd in hopes of getting you started in the right direction:
http://fromthewarp.blogspot.com/2009/03/trick-to-painting-small-icons.html
http://fromthewarp.blogspot.com/2009/05/painting-tactical-squad-arrows-on.html (Scale this one down for shoulderpads)
http://fromthewarp.blogspot.com/2011/02/freehanding-when-to-do-it.html (very important stuff here)
Hope this helps get you started. Any questions, email me directly and I'll help you out!

Not bad, I think making a black outline would help, but overall is good.. They have special pens for that sort of thing at your local craft store.

It could be good to touch up the sharp edges of the red with some white afterwards.
