Ok so here we go again, Some of you may have seen this thread before but i was having some major issues with images.

This is my Abaddon the Despoiler he is my first attempt at painting miniatures for a long while, probably 2/3 years. Also this is my first attempt at modeling with green stuff.

The cape and fur around the top is green stuff, got the fur effect using the point of my modeling knife.
The base is made from green stuff and some everyday household filler, Broken up and used as rocks.

Really regretting not removing all the mould lines now, as the one's i have left really stand out in the photo's. Also i am not happy with how the sword has turned out, tempted to redo it but dont want to end up ruining the rest of the model.

Anyway enough of my rambling here he is.

It's a good start, but it needs work. i would start by repainting the black with a very dark grey, washing it with badab black, then highlighting with the dark grey again; this will give the black more depth.

next i would do the same sort of thing with the sword, paint it regal blue, then layer on some thinned down enchanted blue (leaving some regal blue showing in the center of the blade), wash with asurmen blue, then highlight the edges with enchanted blue.

the fur looks great, but there are a lot of fingerprints on the cloak. i would give it a wash with very thinned down liquid green stuff until the fingerprints don't show. then paint it scab red, followed by red gore over the raised areas, and a light devlan mud wash to blend it together.

after that, it should look 10x better. but as i have already said, it looks pretty good so far, it just needs a little more.

thanks for the tips, especially the method for giving black more depth ive always found it hard to get shading looking right on black areas, will definitly have to give that a try.

was hoping i could get away with the fingerprints on the cloak but looking back at it now it is really obvious that they are prints.

learning to paint as i go here so any links to the better guides on Dakka would be much appreciated.
I would post some pics of my models from when i used to collect but just too ashamed, dont think i had even heard of shading

I'm sorry but what?

As for the green-stuffed cloak. It looks VERY good, but you can kind of see, mostly due to the light, your finger-prints.
Might I suggest next time you do this wearing some latex gloves or maybe just touching it up/flattening it with a wet modeling tool.

i do have to say, he makes a point. this model is let down completely by two things, the arms and the face. it has nothing to do with OP's painting, it is just the sculpt, i hate those arms, and replacing them with normal marine CCW arms makes the model look much, much better. it's just a bit of a pain to find a suitable power sword and lighting claw.

having said that, i would use a grey knight falchion for the sword (scraping off the inquisition insignia, and chaosing up the inscriptions), and the chaos terminator lord lighning claw on a marine arm, or maybe the claw from the jump pack lord, with a storm bolter glued on top
