Subject: Decent SM list?

Thinking of swapping IG for SM due to financial costs, and I should have a job soon so will be easier on the wallet to build up a decent force.
I'm loving the look of Ironclad Dreadnaughts in particular, with hurricane bolter and Seismic Hammor/meltagun.
At a 1500 point list I'm looking at:
Librarian-Terminator armour/stormshield, epistolary: 190
Tactical Squad-+5 models, plasma, Missile Launcher: 180
Tactical Squad-+5 models, plasma, Missile Launcher: 180
Ironclad Dreadnaught- Ironclad Assault launcher: 150
Ironclad Dreadnaught- Ironclad Assault launcher: 150
Terminator squad- cyclone-330
Land Raider Redeemer: 240
Vindicator: Seige sheild: 125
with 50 points to spend, not sure where. Power fists on the tactical squads?
What does dakka think?

I think if you are taking a Land Raider Redeemer, you should have Assault Terminators.
And that the Ironclad Assault Launcher isn't really that good.
And that your troops need transports for objective games.

Agreed.
Tactical Terminators are not very good. You'd be much better off with assault terminators with TH & SS (maybe one guy with LC). Swapping to assault terminators saves you 30pts.
Null Zone is mandatory on the librarian. Epistolary really isn't necessary, but if you're spending the points be sure to take the S6 power. That combined with the force weapon makes him pretty solid at killing characters and monstrous creatures. Of course, the terminators are also good at that, so you're probably better off saving the 50pts.
The whole terminators + LR combo is a lot of points for 1500, but is viable, and is definitely one of the less-expensive routes to go. The landraider needs a multimelta. Extra armor can also be a good choice, but the multimelta really is not optional. Expecially with power of the machine spirit so you can split fire at two targets, or drive 12" and fire the multimelta (or the AC at something AV10, or a flamestorm if a squad is close) is a big part of what makes a loyalist LR worth its cost.
Ironclads are nice, but the assault launchers are not needed. Hunter-killer missiles are a good option if you're not in a drop pod. Take a couple of shots at enemy transports as you're walking across the field. The other option, of course, is cheap Dreads with MM & CCW. 105pts leaves you a bunch left over for speeders, multimelta attack bikes, or transports for the tactical squads.
The tacs are pretty good. Fists can be nice to make the passable at finishing off wounded enemy units, but you're often better off using Combat Tactics to just try to get the heck out of there. Combi-plasmas can also be nice on the sergeants to help decimate nasty enemy units which get close. Rhinos or Razorbacks would really help. I'd recommend cutting a few points in one or two of the ways described above and getting a transport for each squad.

I'd drop epostolary from he librarian that gives you enough points for 2 rhino's for the tac squads, I'd also take assault termis instead of normal. I'd also try and get drop pods for the dreads.

I'll second Mannahnin on the EA and MM for your LRR. EA makes sure it delivers termies. And the MM is uber yummy icing on the AV14 cake.

Yeah the termie thing was an oversight on my part. Giving the LR a Multi-Melta seems sound, but I'm confused about the transports..
What's the point in having a tactical squad at all if only one can fire in a rhino, or none in a razorback? Don't I want to be laying down bolters, plasma and Missile Launcher fire?

(10) man tac squad with a ML and a PC, combat squad them, put the bolters in the razor, charge forward firing, while the big guns hang back and shoot.

It is the 3rd Millennium. For more than a hundred months Games Workshop has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Nottingham. It is the foremost of wargames by the will of the neckbeards, and master of a million tabletops by the might of their inexhaustible wallets. It is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with business strategies from the early Industrial Revolution Age. It is the Carrion Lord of the wargaming scene for whom a thousand veteran players are sacrificed every day, so that it may never truly die. Yet even in its deathless state, GW continues its eternal vigilance. Mighty battleforce starter-sets cross the online-store-infested miasma of the internet, the only route between distant countries, their way lit by a draconian retail trade-agreement, the legal manifestation of the GW's will. Vast armies of lawyers give battle in GW's name on uncounted websites. Greatest amongst its soldiers are the Guardians of the IP, the Legal Team, bio-engineered super-donkey-caves. Their comrades in arms are legion: the writing team and countless untested rulebooks, the ever vigilant redshirts, and the writers of White Dwarf, to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from other games, their own incompetence, Based Chinaman - and worse. To support Games Workshop in such times is to spend untold billions. It is to support the cruelest and most dickish company imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of sales discounts and Warhammer Fantasy Battle, for so much has been dropped, never to be re-published again. Forget the promise of cheaper digital content and caring about the fanbase, for in the GW HQ there is only profit-seeking, Space Marines and Sigmarines. There is no fun amongst the hobby shops, only an eternity of raging and spending, and the laughter of former employees who left GW to join better companies. |

I would drop the Epistolary upgrade, then you would have 100 points left. Enough for an extra unit

Assault Grenades and Bolters thingy on Ironclad Dreadnought is quite bad in game term. You should go for HK missles, Seismic Hammer and DCCW w/ HF (or SB).
That way, they can walk behind your LRC or Rhinos and shoot the missiles first turn. On other turns, they jump in for some fun in close combat. AV13 in close combat is UNBREAKABLE (for Str 8 fists and TH).

Makes sense, forgot about combat squads. Presumably I'd want the sargent (if he had a PF) in with the advancing squad, yes?

He still has the Thunder Hammer? Just dropped the Dreadnaught Close Combat Weapon for Hurricane Bolters since they can dish out a fair amount of punishment.
Looking forward to fielding some of these badboys though. Especially with a Land Raider in my list, my thinking is light anti-tank won't be able to touch it, heavy anti-tank will probably be concentrated on the LR and the dreadnaughts will stomp anything in CC, most units won't even be able to strike back. Shame I need those termies or I'd love to have 3 of these bad boys.

DCCW and Seismic Hammer stack to 3A (instead of 2A). What will 3 bolters do for you that a couple of Rhino bolters can't?
If you don't like DCCW, why not take MM, same range and definitely will kill stuff.

You don't have to stay in the transports all game, although against some armies you'll want t hide your guys in them and force them to expose a unit busting you out, so you can counter-punch. Transports allow you to spend one or two turns getting to an objective instead of half the game. They also allow you to drive your tac squads down the throat of an opposing shooty army which is bad in HtH (like IG). Even if you never get in them in a given game, they're still useful as mobile terrain, movement-blockers and tank-shockers.
