What: 40k BAO style event with six rounds at 1850 points
Where: Strategicon (Sherriton Gateway Hotel near LAX)
When: Memorial Day Weekend (May 26 and 27)
Cost: $60 Entry Fee, which included a full weekend pass for the Strategicon Gaming Convention itself (www.strategicon.net)

Details: (www.slaughterinspace.com) (And check out SCGWL on Facebook)
This is going to be a six round event with purely book missions. There are side events to stratify pairings and break ties, plus there is a judge assigned comp score to pair people off for the first two rounds. There will be four awards: Best General (W/L with tie breakers only), Best Painted, Best Sportsman, and Players Choice. As a result of abandoning soft scores for placements, we will be monitoring player behavior with more scrutiny and (in extreme cases) taking more direct action if players do not conduct themselves in a respectful manner. This basically means, don't cheat and don't be a complete assclown or we will reverse your game/toss you. Basic common sense, really.

The games will be played on our wooden toppers with high quality terrain and a two foot setup area for each player to stage their armies (or place their beer!) on the tables, themselves. The scheduling and other details can be found in the rules packet, which is downloadable from the web page.

Special Forge World Notes:
For this Slaughter, we are going to allow the use of all forge world and apoc supplements, with the following caveats. All units must be able to fit into a normal force org chart (ie, no Super Heavy units, Formations, or Gargantuan Creatures). All such models must be represented properly. This means that if there is an existing Forge World model for it, that you must use said model. If there is existing model, your conversion must be easily recognizable and based off of the GW model line. If there is any question as to what is an acceptable conversion, please email a photo to the main judge (Scott at scott.tiveron@gmail.com) and he can answer your query on that. The second major caveat is that any unit with flier mechanics may not be used, unless its rules allow for it to behave like a skimmer in normal 40k play (which should be nearly all of them). Third , alternative army lists, such as the additional Space Marine Chapters in the Badab War or Corsairs in the Doom of Mymeara, are allowed. Said armies must have some form of proper representation and not just be "my generic counts as guys are Space Sharks today" representations. Again, if you are in doubt, ask Scott as to what is acceptable. Finally, you must have the appropriate source material on hand for any units you are using and allow your opponent to reference said material at will. The goal here is to broaden the game and make it more fun, not create gotcha moments for your opponent, so the onus is on you to make your opponent aware of every detail of your forge world units.

Those attending this year's slaughter will be afforded a chance to vote at the end of the event on whether or not this policy on forge world will continue. If the player base in attendance likes it as a whole, they get to keep it next year. If not, we will dump it and go back to the basic books. The choice is in the hands of those who attend (and not the internet nerd rage armchair general brigade) and it is up to you guys whether we will continue to include these units in the future.

Any questions can be directed at Scott or I. Also, I will be at Kingdom Con in a couple weeks hanging around playing Fantasy and chatting with Reece and his crew, so you can catch me in person there if you have more specific discussion.

~Q

So is it BAO mission or is the packet correct and it's book missions?

Its Book Missions. When I say BAO style, I mean specifically strict win or loss with soft scores not affecting the top award and bonus objectives used purely as tie breakers. The one thing we did make certain of is that Dawn of War and the two objective mission are never paired (to limit the likelyhood of draws on this one). I like the principle behind the BAO mission, but I think Scott and I both agreed that it lead to some really odd army setups and Yak is right about it making the games somewhat repetitive. With this setup, people still have to bring some workable troops and MSU is not the only game in town. Deathstar lists, like Draigowing as one example, should be a little more tame under this too.

Sounds good, I just wanted to make sure
I like the boost to 1850 as well, I feel 1750 is a bit too restrictive of a format. It seems to require awkward list cuts.

I've always found 1750 to be awkward and restrictive too, 1850 seems to be a "magic" number of sorts while 1500 is tactically restrictive and 2000 is tactically permissive. Though, the more points the better for me =).

Tomb stalkers + immotekh + wraiths makes for a pretty beastly core of an army

The FW part makes me a little uneasy, as I've had next to no exposure to those units, and don't have access to the IA books to research them. Is there a place online somewhere I can at least analyze what units are possible? If I'm able to go, would be nice to not get caught off guard.

Also, I can't get an email through to either of the ones posted on the website, trying to inquire about open space.

I wouldn't fret too much about the IA stuff, especially because you really have no idea what, if any, IA units you'll end up facing so it makes little sense to really try to start figuring all IA units out just in case you might run into one or two.

As every player has to bring a copy of the rules for the units they're playing, just take a few moments before the game and read over the rules for any IA units you may end up facing and ask all the questions you need to feel comfortable heading into the game.

If you do have the $ and want a couple really nice books, then picking up Imperial Armor Apocalypse 2nd edition and Imperial Armor Apocalypse 2 from Forgeworld will get you about 90% of the rules for current IA models on the market, so these are easily your best bets if you really feel like you need to know what IA stuff is out there 'waiting to get you'.

As for free online resources, I think the best you can get are just like general overviews of some of the IA units that people have reviewed. For example, Reece reviewed the units from the IAA 2nd edition book on his frontline gaming site here:

@Greenbay924
It isn't much to worry about, as Yakface said. Honestly, 1 in 5 people will have anything FW, and if so, it will be a unit that doesn't do a whole lot in most cases.

As someone who voiced some concern about the FW inclusion (I wanted to ban a couple things), the only things you really need to be familiar with are:

LR Achilles-
Meltaproof LR with -1 on the penetrating hits table and a Thunderfire cannon. Its about the most broken thing FW has come out with, but it will literally be 20% of the enemy army if they bring one. I would expect to see a couple of these played in the tourney.

Lucious Pod-
Pod that lets dreds assault the turn they step out. Can be dealt with if you know its comming.

Mek Wagon-
A fast dedicated transport for Big Meks with a Roller. Can lay waste to mech spam if you let it.

The rest of the stuff out there is really just minor variations on existing units that any normal balanced army can contend with. The corsair army might play a little differently, but they are still space elves with lasers, for example.

But like I said, earlier, this is an experiment and we are going to be looking for very close feedback on this one.

The thing about the lucious pod is that the only really useful things to put in it are either a ironclad or Bjorn. Either one will wreck something, but you will most likely give up whichever one you sent in. I could see the lucious wrecking face in a vulkan all drop list though. That's a potential first turn tabling if the opponent doesn't know what's coming. And if they reserve out, you can hold your ironclads back and wait for them to come on.

It sucks copious amounts of equestrian phallus to face a Lucious when playing Tau or certain forms of Nids, though. And personally, I would much rather play the dread spam Vulcan list than Hamminator Spam, but niether one would be a pleasant game for sure.

To be honest, having played against the Achilles on a few occasions, it's a bit of a joke. Yes, it will hold one objective, but that's about all it will do. Play a few test games against a proxied one, and you'll know how to handle it in no time.
