I don't care what anyone thinks about Ultras, I like 'em. To date I have two tactical squads (4th Co), one Chapter Master and 7 Honor Guard plus a Chaplain, 5 man termie squad, 5 man Vanguard Vet (metal, thank God, and another box of metal to paint down the road), 1 Venerable Dreadnought, 1 Rhino and one Vindicator. I got boxes of stuff to paint yet, mostly Ultras, but some IG as well (Battle Force box) to paint as an Ultramar PDF, as well as some GK and even a small legal army of Crons.
I will mention before hand that I do factory fresh on everything. I've tried a little weathering and battle damage on spare bits and bobs, but haven't been happy enough with the results to try it on an actual table top model.
I've also noticed a lot of people these days consider only Golden Demon level painting to be table top quality. When I started painting and gaming with historicals, there were the odd guys here and there who painted to that level for the table top, but mostly that level of painting was reserved for 54mm display figures. Things change, and I'm OK with that. As I said in my intro post, I've been working on some techniques and wanting to learn others so I can up my painting. These pics I'm posting represent what I feel is an acceptable table top quality, and maybe a bit more. I know my basing is a bit ghetto, and I know the edges are old school green, but I'm 48, so that qualifies me as old school.
