Does the thought of playing footy Guard or Orks or Tyranids appeal to you but you get slightly nauseated at the thought of painting hundreds of models? Does your spouse give you "the look" when you return from the FLGS with a bag of newly purchased minis? Do you have kids? Do you have an inquisitive cat?

This thread is for you.

I started 40k about 15 months ago. As an adolescent I played the first Space Hulk and epic Space Marine. After graduating high school my efforts pivoted to school, career and girls. With college at an SEC school, 40k was off the radar. Way off. Now I have a lovely (and understanding) wife a career, kids and a gimpy dog.

My childhood friend and I rekindled our relationship over the width of the continent and our emails soon turned to 40k and games. He had never really stoppped playing. But after a marriage, return from school and a child his Space Wolves sat unused and lonely in some corner of a lonely family closet.

I started doing research and found this site. I bought several codicies before I even bought the game (IG, Orks, Eldar, Necron, Space Marines, and Space Wolves). Ultimately, I decided on orks for a themed army, "The Orkansaw Razorbax." I was intrigued by this new technique "dipping" qnd quickly adopted it. As my insanity into 40k deepened for some reason (this damn site) my lists kept getting bigger and more $$$. I knew I was hooked when I finished painting my ninth Killa Kan. Then my sites turned to the holy grail of the WYSIWYG ork player... The green tide. I had painted 2 shoota mobs of 30 and one AoBR Slugga mob. I bought another AoBR set and two boxes of Boyz to bring myself up to 4 mobs of 30. It was torture to paint those last 40 Boyz. I mean TORTURE. Yet I was determined. The tide must come. So after some thought some beers and some dakkadakka browsing I decided to paint on the sprue. I made my FLGS owner smile as I gave him my credit card for the 6 boxes of Boyz.

I started painting 1 week ago and kept track of my time. It's totaled about 30-36 hours of work. Closer to 30. I documented every step so here you go:

While I commend you for choice of army as a fellow Ork player, my only concern is you do not indicate cleaning any mould lines. Orks have horrible mould / flash, at least mine did. When you are done can you take close up shots?

I started my 1850 list in January, and managed to grin and bear through it by April 1st for the Colonial GT. It was not a pleasant experience, however I am pleased with the end result.

Close up shots please, any vehicles in the army at all or just boys?

@njpc: Well here's the whole Waagh pics. Sorry about the washed out details. It's poor lighting and a iPad Camera. I know the Battle Wagon has a "like new" appearance as does everything else. This is the result of the photographer not the mini. I have some others in my gallery if you are interested. Also, the minis are glossy finish.... which I know you won't like, but I kinda do. They ARE toys after all.

@NightHowler: Here's the Waagh as promised. Thanks for rekindling my interest. It's been fun. Looking forward to some tourneys and travel!

Your army looks great! I love the red-green constrast you have going on, it's very 2nd Edition. What dipping technique did you use?

@NimbleJack3: I used a brown polyurethane varnish. Specifically, "Minwax Polyshade: Royal Satin Walnut." First I do actually dip the mini into the can up to his shins. Then using an old brush, I spread it around, letting the excess drip back into the can. I let the mini dry after brushing the whole base and feet too. The drying must be supervised because they will stick fast to whatever you set them on to drain. I suggest a firm, smooth porous surface. Do not use paper or a paper towel. Move the mini about 3 times in an hours so you can look for unsightly drips and make sure it doesn't become a permenant fixture on your painting surface. Wear gloves. Its a pain in the a$$ to clean off your hands.

Thanks for looking...

I have no issues with a glossy finish on ork armies. While I do not dip models, plenty of guys in my gaming club do. My thoughts on glossy orks: what would not expect a rampaging Ork to be covered in sweat

I think your stuff looks table top quality. Finishing an Ork army takes commitment and know how. I like you've covered all your bases with Kans, wagon, kopters, and nobs. My orks also have the "new" look. I didn't do battle damage, I like clean looking paint.

Nice work, Happy gaming!

The only thing I'd change based on the standard you are working at, is to go back and wash all the red armor in some black.
Right now it's far too bright for my tastes.
