"No one would have believed that in the last years of the 41st Millenium, that Imperial affairs were being watched from the timeless worlds of space. No one could have dreamed that we were being scrutinzed as someone with a microscope studies the creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. Few men even considered the possiblity of life in other galaxies and yet across the gulf of space, minds immeasurably superior to ours regarded this world with envious eyes, and slowly........

and surely,

they drew their plans against us................"

Thanks guys, will post it all up as fast as I can..

------------------------------------------------------------The Battlefield-------------------------------------------------------------

We put 2 x 6" tables together and had an 8 x 4 playing area, this allowed us to have a nice space to set up our stuff and keep reserves and casualties etc. We were playing in Alex's shop 'Cut & Thrust' in bristol, well worth a visit if you're local.

We deployed the terrain so it looked good and was balanced, we used 2 gray base boards and looted the extensive range of terrain availible to get a consistant look across the table. The terrain is mainly a 'Fortress of Skulls Redemption' set that Alex cut into sections and mounted into foam blocks, the big LOS blockers are also foam with Hallowean skulls added to grimdark it up.

I won the roll to choose sides and picked the nearest shown here, I had the Silo on my right flank, then a barricade, then my 'Ammo dump' which gained an objective, the central silo got one in front of it, the little bunker to the right of Skull rock became an objective, the other ammo dump in the backgound on the left of Skull rock too and the last one placed on the long rock/fortification section behind the dark angel tower.

Defend the crisps!!

Ammo dump on Nid side of the table, we both had one and both gained objectives.

We decided to play just a big normal game (ie not APOCALYPSE so it would be less mental) but agreed that we could ignore FOCs within reason, and to play 'Pitched Battle' and 'Seize Ground' as Dawn of war Killpoints would have been daft..

As I won the roll for table edge I deployed first, but I would get the important advantage of going first so all my big guns could even the odds somewhat..

Automatically Appended Next Post:
----------------------------------------------------------Deployment--------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a shot down my line from the Imperial right

My corner right silo is held by my 10 man Tack 1 and backed up by my trusty Whirlwind, manning the barricade is a RL combat squad from Tack 2. They're backed up in turn by a Russ and the LC Sentinal. My ammo dump is held by Platoon 2 with Commissar Dredd and PCS 2. The big glowing green floating testicles throughout are our objective markers.

The centre is held by Pask and his horribly beweaponed Russ, my CCS in their Chimera and the Rocket battery. To the left of them another Russ and then its Platoon 1 with Commissar B'stard and PCS 1 holding some craters.

The imperial left is held by the Vendetta (loaded with 2 x Plasma Grenadiers), trying to hide from rupture cannons behind the tower, the 4th and final Russ is to the right of the rock spire whoose heights provided the Devastators good fields of fire. Behind it the mortars set up. The extreme left was held by my Razorback with Tack 2 FL combat squad and my Captain as well as the lurking Scout Sentinal.

This gave me a solid firebase and still left me with massed reserves...

Having seen the Imperials occupy defensive postions the alien space fiends slithered to their starting places..

Imperial right, double Trygon (eek) Hormies and Tyrant, both the Ratlings and Stealers have infiltrated to those positions...

Just to the left we can see the Pyrovore and the first mighty Tyrannofex, 2 x Zoaney, Carnifex...and a Heirophant fortunately still in the cabinet (phew)

The Sniper Scouts infiltrated into the Dark Angel tower for a commanding view, just to the right part of the Trygon prime can be seen, with some more Hormies, then the other Tyrannofex and Zoaney

To left again we can see the last Hormies and infiltrating Stealers..as well as a Defence laser I still think I should have been able to use...

Here are some shots from the bad guys point of view:

+++++++++++++++++Placebo XXX, the 30th and only habitable planet in the Placebo system was thought of as vital in guarding the approaches to the Empire of Ultramar. The various planets in the Ultramarine's private kingdom took turns to garrison this small and otherwise uninteresting dominion, currently the Macragge 15th were stationed here on a cool down deployment after the major and bloody engagement at K'Plah IV (do you want to know more? Historical archive availble here: Clicky ). There were recent indications a splinter fleet from Hive Fleet Kolodotschko (named after the Radical Inquistitor who first discovered them) previously thought expunged were in the area and a group of Ultras commanded by Captain Ivor were dispatched to stiffen the line..

They had fought together before and though victorious, Company Commander Steiner had not covered himself in glory. Now both forces were deployed around the ruins of a defunct fortress..there was a strange green mist which obscured visual scanning but the auspex showed no enemy presence..

"I feel the approach of the Xenos in my long service stud, Captain Steiner" Intoned the Marine with a voice like aged granite.

"My Master Lord Captain of the Blessed Angels of Deliverance Ivor, the scanners show nothing!" countered the Guard commander, eager to show himself competent in the eyes of his god.

"Still my Intuition is rarely wrong...." the marine gazed into the distance meaningfully...

"Surely such superstition is below you my lord, the chances of anything coming from ......" Captain Steiners words died in his throat as a sudden gust of wind dispersed the green mist revealing foul xenos, almost within striking distance!

"Oh for Emperors sake" muttered the Guardsman rolling his eyes.

"They must be jamming our systems somehow!" growled the Marine looking for helmet which always seemed to pick moments like this to vanish..

"How can they be jamming us, they're just animals" replied Steiner looking obviously rattled.

"Enough, to your command vehicle, may the Emperor protect!" +++++++++++++++++++++++++

That's a pretty way to say Alex 'Seized the Cheese' and gleefully went first, this could be really bad....

--------------------------------------------------Turn 1-----------------------------------------------------

After Alex seized the initiative I may have said a bad word..

The infiltrating Stealers on both flanks advanced through cover at moderate speed ahead of the main force as is their wont,

Almost the entire army ran, with the important exception or the might Tyrannofexs..., Tyrannofexes?, Tyrannofexi?, Tyrannofexum?. Anyhoo..

The beast on the Imperial left shouldered and fire his mighty goo gun and managed to hit the Vendetta which just qualified for a cover save that it went on to pass....

The other lined up with Pask in his 255pt ride and ....

missed with both goo shots..

Alex may have said a bad word about here..

------------Alliance----------

Nid shooting phases are rarely devastating but I was lucky for none of my prime vehicles to get toasted, they better get stuck in fast before that pod of Zoaneys lands...

All the anti Infantry on the left fired at the Stealers there and after mortars and a Battlecannon shell; they were thinned.
However they were still numerous and would probably be able to make it into assault with the Devastators next turn, the Razorback bearing the Captain moved forwards to cover them somewhat.

All the AT on the left pounded the Trygon Prime which sucked up rounds from the Marine Snipers, Devastators and 'Bring it Down!'ed rocket battery before keeling over, causing a sigh of relief from Plat 1..who had ineffectually rattled it with assorted pathetic weapons..

Note Trygon shaped hole in the above photo..

The Vendetta Freeem'ed the Right Tyrannofex for 2 wounds and the Armoured Sentinal also burned one away, Pask taking careful aim at his nemesis slightly confidant in the knowledge that he needed to score 3 wounds; blazed away with both Vanqusher and Lascannon...miss miss... heat up the plasma sponsons, mis, hit! (only because it's massive) and a 1 to wound...sigh

On the right, most firepower blazed at the Stealers; again with little result, the Whirly missed, Tack 1 caught a few as they skittered amount the boulders, the Rats took a wound off the Trygon as did the RL Squad of Tack 2..

Not much damage by either side (considering the amount of my firepower), a Trygon down but the reserves begin now and the sound of large cylinder like objects falling at speed was heard.....

Those Tyrannofi (?shrug?) are a welcome addition on Alex's side on paper at least. I'm keen to see how they do in the battle (not a great 1st round), they certainly look great! (Alex, did you magnetise them to use as tervigons? Brooke's eyeing the kit and I wondered if it's possible to magnetise em).

No wheezey pete thank christ, so no stench wall, there were some proper randoms but they were more the odd kind (rather than directly offensive..) and they just looked about really, most of the game was 'after hours' anyway . I know what you mean about the Tyranno's should help him suppress my armour for once..

I'm not sure if you could magnetize them, there are little connector/locator dips which are supposed to have tiny spines (for Tyrannofex mode) in em or the tabs for the rank chest womb/vagina so you'd have to leave off the spines leaving a row off circular slots along the torso or manetize each one so they could be removed, you'd probably have to magnetize it to the base as well as access to swap out components would be fiddly.. *shrugs* Might be too much bother but I didn't have a proper look with magnets in mind...

---------------------------Turn 2----------------------------------

The skys were split by giant spores which crashed into the Imperial backfield..

On the right the pod split open fountaining shock absorbant goo everywhere revealing some very queasy looking Stealers, they lurched out and ran, "I'll be alright just let me sit down for a bit.." they said looking green...The pod itself unsure what the fuss was about as it offered to roll down a window earlier and they said they were fine..spooged a variety of spines at the nearby Combat squad killing one...

Their non airbourne counterparts scuttled close enough to Tack 1 to ensure a charge...eek, they plunged into the brave sons of Ultramar who combat knifed a few but the stealers killed about half the marines in an flurry of claws.

In the centre the Tyranno facing Pask took a deep breath, carfefully sighted his massive compensator cannon and fired,

a miss

and a Hit!!

Failed to penetrate..

2 Zoanthropes rolled their non eyes and drifted over towards Pask and Warp Lanced him, one periled but passed his save, the other missed..

A carnifex rolled his eyes and sprinted to position to be able to assault Pask next turn.

Both Tyrants moved closer to there prey and reached out to the warp to Paroxysm nearby units and both failed 'Perils' on double sixes and wounded themselves...

"I feel a great disturbance in the force, as if a thousand voices cried out at once and were silenced..."

In the centre the 2nd pod crashed down and released 3 Zoaneys all in spitting distance of the Vendetta......they readied their heat rays and.....imbolised it and destroyed a set of lasers...so didn't kill it but they did survive the strange warp storm which seemed to be brewing..

On the far Imperial left the Stealers nearly in range of the Devastators needed about a 3 on a difficult terrain roll to rend them limb from limb...2,2,1.........

The other Tyranno failed to penetrate the Russ he was firing at..

The Imperials had got off lightly and they knew it, they did have 2 very dangerous units right in there deployment zone but they were already barking call for reserves to be released to reniforce the firebase........

Great looking armies. Reports are always better when the armies are well-painted. And an HG Wells shout-out. Fantastic.

What are the models you are using for spores? They're very nice.

"If you really want to know what it was like, to fight in the air in the great War, then go up to someone you have never met and who has never done you the slightest harm and pour a two-gallon tin of petrol over them. Then apply a match, and when they are nicely ablaze, push them from a fifteenth-floor window after first perhaps shooting them a few times in the back with a revolver. And be aware as you are doing these things that ten seconds later someone else will quite probably do them to you. This will exactly reproduce... the substance of First World War aerial combat and will cost your country nothing. It will also avoid the necessity of ten million other people to die in order for you to enjoy it."

Thanks!

Yes I'm glad at least one other person gets the WoTW theme running through..

-----------------La Belle Alliance----------------

Many Imperial units reported from reserve and were immediatly dispatched to prevent total collapse on the right flank..

The pod and it's Stealer Cargo were a priority, in a scream of engines the Hellhound and Speeder positioned themselves for the ultimate flaming, with a torrent of promethium the Stealers were wiped out...

The PCS stood to and fired on the pod itself and slew the disgusting transport with flamer and meltagun..

To the right the beleaguered Tack 1 were surrounded and wiped out in revenge by the infiltrating Stealers..

The Assault Marines bounded onto the Pod bourne Zoanthropes and began to chainsword them apart..

The Terminators executed a perfect deep strike behind the Tyrrano on the Right (which had 3 wounds left) and started up 'Ol Painless' which amazing cut it in half with one volley (2 rends, 1 failed save)

In the background there can be seen a hole where a Carnifex used to be, Pask planted 2 perfect cannon shots into it..

Still on the right flank various weapons began to taget the approaching pile of mosterous creatures, all manner of weapons were employed from lasguns to battlecannon and succeded in bringing down a Zoaney and some Tyrant Guard, however an angry Tyrant and 2 Trygons remainded, both probably in charge range....To the right can be seen the Hormies holding the bunker objective, they were missed by the Whirly..

The Stealers over on the left were targeted by most things able to and were cut down to a few determined beasties..

The other Tyrant was advancing up the centre, Captain Steiner ordered the nearby rockets to Bring it Down! only to again (see previous BatRep) roll double 6 and prevent any more orders being issued....the Beast took some fire from them and Battlecannon anyway but still advanced heedless of the metal storm..

Platoon 1 occupying the craters to the left of centre fired into the onrushing Hormies and slew many (without the benefit of FRFSRF).

The Imperials had caused some heavy losses but the remaining MCs were in range to strike and there were still beasts in reserve..

Thanks dude,

----------------------Turn 3----------------------

The Nids called in their last reinforcements successfully, a Lictor decloaked behind the Devastators..

And another cylinder of Stealers crashed to the ground to contest the central objective, through it did scatter in front of Pask.

On the right flank the Tyrant and Trygon combo moved to to assault range on Plat 2, Commissar Dredd twisted the top of his cane and drew out a slim shimmering blade, "Fix bayonets!" he barked..

The 2 monsters carved through the unit killing 11 men, "Run men we're outclassed there's no chance" screamed one of the sargeants, this was followed by the characteristic double thud of a bolt weapon..."Weep for him as his faith was lacking, rejoice for my faith is limitless!" cried the commissar as he threw himself at the huge Leader Beast and the squad held...

Just..

Just to the right of this struggle the last Trygon smashed into the remaining combat squad Marine of Tack 2 and devoured them..

In the centre the remaining Hormies assaulted the Rocket Battery and fought each other to a standstill..

The other Tyrant, just behind, reached out and prepared to incapacitate Plat 1 with debilitating pain when..

He encountered the same warp static as before? What could this mean, was the Hive Mind angry with them?

The remaining Zoaney, drifted closer to Pask, and very carefully tried to access the warp..

**Pzoooow** Yep works for him.....The pod people Stealers ran behind the central Silo claiming that objective..

The Pyrovore, span around and gave the smug Terminators a good dousing killing one of the walking tanks, s/he followed it up with an assault but failed to score a kill, a Marine casually crushed it with his PF only to discover Pyro's explode when you do that, fortunately no further Marines died in the conflagration...

The much depleted Stealers on the left finally managed to make it into combat with the Devastators (who can come through the flesh hook fire of the Lictor unscathed) a few were killed on both sides leaving a single Stealer wondering where all his friends had gone...

The Stealers locked in combat with Tack 1 were victorious and consolidated to the far side of the Silo, acutely aware of the number of heavy flamers nearby..

With this the turn passed onto the bloodied Imperials, who looked for deliverance from their remainig reserves...

-------------------------Imperials------------------------

On the Embattled right, there were the recently victorious Stealers and unengaged Trygon to worry about, as well as Plat 2 desperate stand against the other Trygon and Tyrant. The Guard Veterans in their Chimera had arrived last turn and slunk around the far side of the silo, they now pounced and with their Heavy Flamer on the transport as well as the one on the Speeder and few pot shots from the crew wiped out the skulkers.

The unengaged Trygon (just visible in above pic, well his tail..) still had 3 wounds, the Hellhound, Prometheus, hosed him down with flames to no effect but the hull MM scored a hit, gallantly charging in from reserve came the Dreadnought also scoring a wound, the final hit was down to PCS 2 who whiffed with the MG and pinged pistol shots off it's carapace....rats, the monster had to die, the Dreadnought consulted the Nid codex to discover they would attack simultaneously...he bravely girded (should that be girdered?) his loins to sacrifice himself for his brothers and charged the towering mega snake crying "For the Greater Good!!....no wait..." he successfully caused the last wound but took 5 penetrating hits...

But had the good manners not to explode and kill the squishies..

Just to the left, Commissar Dredd continued to exhort his men "Faith alone can overturn the ..." as he glanced over his shoulder he realized only he remained...

So he stood his ground alone.....

In the centre the Rocket team managed to slay the last Hormies and consolidate towards the objective..the CCS Chimrea advanced and flamed up the pod Stealers, a few more shots from the embarked CCS reduced them to a few individuals,

Which the advancing Terminators were only too happy to handle with torrents of mass reactive ammo....

The Mr Headache Tyrant was targetted and destroyed by the immobile Vendetta and several battlecannon..

The Assault marines slew the remaining Pod Zoaney...but were too from the action to achieve anything else.

On the left the Captain disembarked from his Razorback that had been stunned by a Zoaney last turn and assaulted the Lictor threatening the Dev's

The Lictor (nicely converted pose huh) decapitated a Marine but the Relic Blade drew blood and the remaining Marines blugeoned it to death..

The Captain et al then consildated to offer support the Devs.

Some body blows were struck but the Nids were not out yet.......

----------------------Turn 4-------------------------

The Intergalatic menace pushed forward as always..

The remaining MCs took position contesting the objective...

The centre Zoaney managed to wreak the CCS's Chimera..

The unit disembarked to use it as cover..

But remembering Synapse rules we checked and both Hormie units holding objectives were out of it meaning they would soon run off the 2 objectives they were holding (the group on the far left had lost their sheparding Zoaney last turn to sniper fire)..

On the right the daisy chain of Hormies linking them to the Hive mind was out of range too..they were also surrounded by flamers of various kinds..

The defiant big bugs...and the Imperial firing squad..

The burning wreaks of the centre, the Zoaney is surrounded...

The Terminators contest the centre...

The last Stealer alive is brought down but takes a few with it..the Tyrannofex fails again to destroy any Russes..on the long barricade/cliff thing the Hormies are left leaderless..

We both felt the games was played out at this stage and time constraints started to press...however we both enjoyed the game and got to use new toys, which is always great.

I think some crippling bad luck on turn 2 prevented this from needing a turn 5 to decide the result and I also made an error I noticed while putting this report together where I had assigned hits to Weapon teams of Plat 2 when they were Str6 and would have instant killed them, this would have released the Trygon and Tyrant from Commissar Dredd's stubborness to break other stuff on that flank, however there still was an Infantry Platoon in reserve to the ultimate result probably wouldn't have changed, just assume that flank lost the PCS and Russ!

I think the Tyrannos were good if obviously plagued with meh dice, I think they'll prove useful in the future, Pask was great (haven't used a special character since 2nd ed), but he and a Tyrannofeaces cost about the same in points however...which is crazy considering the firepower that russ can kick out...

I hope you have enjoyed reading please comment if you have as it takes ages to do these and it's nice to know that it was liked..

See you on the Battlefield

We all know Tyranids are never really defeated,

The swarm will return

....maybe with Tervigons
