Sorry to hear about your arm, but the pics you have show you are already off to a good start. It looks like you have good brush control and your paints don't appear to be too thick, and thats alot more than can be said for my first few years painting. Some simple things I can think of to improve the look of your guardsmen are: Do another, brighter highlight of their skin tones. You don't even need to be good at details, just do a gentle dry brush with elf skin or an analogous color and it will make your skins pop alot more. Another thing is that the armor and fabric on your guardsmen appears to be very similar in color. If you choose to paint one in a contrasting color it will give your mini's a much more defined look.
