Hi,

I was just wondering what the cheapest way of stripping models would be?

Thanks for any help in advance

Hello there.
If you are talking about metal and plastic figures then the cheapest way is to get some dettol. Also note it can be hazardous to use. Buy some rubber gloves (it really hates skin, eyes and for God's sake don't drink it!). Get a container, pour in undiluted dettol, put models in. Depending on how old the paint job is the paint should start coming off after an hour. It could take a couple of soaks but you should get most or all of the paint off.

Fairy Power Spray. Take jar, spray on models liberally, close jar, wait a few hours/overnight, remove with tweezers, swish in water, scrub off with toothbrush. Done. I've done close to 50 models and have used maybe half the bottle. Safe on plastics, the old Forgeworld resin or metal. The new Finecast, I've not heard of anything that can strip that safely yet.

Examples: These have all been stripped from varying levels of painting (including some varnished) back to the original model.

@LadyCassandra
you spray it on?
I normaly unscrew the top and empty the bottle into a jar,
once the models have been left in over night the paint comes right off,

Yup, works like a dream, as you can see, and there's less waste. Be sure to shake them a few times to get a good covering. Because it's so thick, it doesn't really slide all the bottom, so you can do that.

Dettol is probably the cheapest and easiest to come by in the UK.

Has anyone ever tried stripping models in cheap vodka?

I cant actually find fairy power spray in my local super market for some reason, i wanted some for the dishes too!

Fairy Power Spray. The winner - end of!
In my opinion it doesn't take that long at all.

I use a cleaning product called simple green, diluted 50% with water let it soak over night. It has worked good for me, I have used it to rescue a few models from eBay.

A well thought out closing remark.

Generic brake fluid.

Don't leave plastic models in for more than a few hours. It WILL eat them right up.

Paint just falls of. A quick rinse with a toothbrush and you are set.

As far as I'm aware, you can't get Simple Green in the UK? It works similarly to Fairy Power Spray, except you can leave the models in for a very very long time without any problems on the models themselves (years, in fact. For plastic.)

I avoid brake fluid because it's horribly horribly toxic. What all the other options on this list have in common is that they are pretty much safe to use. Take all the recommended safety precautions with it that the supplier informs you about. Honestly though, I'm not sure why you'd choose this when there are pretty of less dangerous stripping agents about, unless you already have brake fluid in the house.
