I'm not talking about stuff like
"AH-HA! I SUNK YOUR BATTLESHIP, SUCKKAAAHHH" type stuff. I mean one or two word phrases that are important

I'm playing a tournament here in China on May 1st (the Chinese "May Day" holiday) which is a huge deal here. I don't think they've had a foreigner in a tournament, they never get to play against whities, and most of them read English better than they speak. I on the other hand, cannot speak or read Chinese (I even have trouble with Pinyon ) or at least very little. So I'm going to write basic words on cards, probably on a little stick and hold them up as appropriate, with the Chinese character on top and the English word on the bottom. Simple things like "Cover save!" and I can point to his units or my own. "to hit" for my shooting. I know my Chinese numbers so I will make basic cards like "Armor Pen AP)" "Strength (S)" and then say a number along with it... so what other cards should I make?

What other important words am I missing? Once again I can do basic things like (show "to hit" card) and say "San!" and point upwards. They usually catch on that it means I need 3 or more to hit. A lot of things that can be displayed will just be mimed out. Like if my opponent doesn't measure I'll just say "range" and pull out my tape measurer. Other things that can be mimed would be appreciated too!

Also, I'm going to color coordinate all of my dice so that it'll stay easy. I got the pack of every color so it should be easy (and give my clear dice that always roll ones and twos to the lasguns haha).

How about cards for the three phases (movement, shooting, assault)
Invulnerability save and do on?

None of my guys have invulnerable saves, so I dunno if I need that one! What's "do on" for? Or do you mean "due on", like I'm giving them homework

Statistics for statistic checks (e.g. getting run down post combat, JOTWW, all that jazz)

If you outflank/reserve units, have a card for 'reserve rolling' or something, so they know you are doing that?

Damage table for vehicles?

Psychic Tests (i you have psykers, also, force weapon card if you do)

'I get a re-roll for my' and it would be used in combination with other cards (armour save, to wound, etc), because there is more than just twin-linking which deals with re-rolls

I have S, T, Ld, cards are there other ones that I need for statistic checks?
I don't have any reserves, BUT I do have Officer of the Fleet so I need to make sure to get that one in! Thanks, I would have overlooked that.

Initiative definitely, that is or running away after combat. I can't think of any WS, BS, W, or A checks, so you should be good just adding Initiative

Initiative is a good one, though I doubt that I'll survive anything that charges me haha maybe I'll have something like a single Necron Warrior charge a squad Added it to the list!

Also, what is your army list? That'll help a bit with anything we couldn't think of. And you have a codex in......the Chinese dialect of the area (mandarin??), right?

Your army list would help.

Also, quick side note. Chinese only has 1 script. Just how it's read is different.

Good to know. As you can tell I've never studied it, I always found European languages easier in school, and even then I dropped them like hot coals when I reached year 10. I just knew Japanese had multiple scripts, so I thought Chinese might too.

A few Dark Eldar weapons require Wounds tests.

Why not just hire an interpreter or guide for the day? They're relatively cheap in China (when I went to Shanghai in '05, I hired one for about $15 for the entire week that I was there), and will probably be easier and faster than digging through flash cards to try and find the right one for each situation.

No other cards come to mind, the codex has explanations for things like grav chute insertion, orders, etc.

First one is just going to be mimed out. Easy enough to point at one of my units and point at one of his units. Worked so far!
As for the second one I'm running a Mech list, so I don't really have much for special rules, short of the Officer of the Fleet, which is something Li is gonna write up in Chinese for me. Explaining a detailed rule is gonna be tough haha At least I know most if not all of the Codexs pretty well so there shouldn't be many/any surprises as far as rules go. Even if I had a card with the outline it'd just be easier to point out the rule in the Codex and either he will understand it or we'll have to call someone over haha

And @Chesh, Shanghai and Beijing are completely different situations. Beijing is a muuuuuch bigger tourist spot, so a translator is going to cost a ton more than 15 USD for a day. Although 2 of my TAs might be interested enough that I could talk one of them into swinging by for a little bit.
