Hey all,

I've decided to start a new army. Because I usually play really durable assault armies, I figured I should start a shooty, fragile army. After following blogs on Dakka by the likes of Mechanicum Jon and Vanq, I decided that the Dark Eldar were just the evil elves in space I was looking for. I'll be working to have this list finished and ready to go by the 8th of June, in time for graduation.

Spoiler:

Haemonculus, liquifier
Haemonculus, liquifier

9x wyches, hek w/ agonizer, in raider with disintegrator, NS, FF, shock prow
5x wracks, liquifier, in a raider with disintegrator, NS, FF, shock prow
5x warriors w/ blaster, dual SC venom
5x warriors w/ blaster, dual SC venom
5x warriors w/ blaster, dual SC venom

5x scourges, 2 haywire blasters
5x scourges, 2 haywire blasters

ravager, 3DL, NS, FF
ravager, 3DL, NS, FF
ravager, 3DL, NS, FF

Pretty standard list, I guess. Ravagers and warriors in venoms a must, but then wyches to tie up deathstars and things I'd rather not have shooting my army, scourges to help with vehicles, and the wracks to melt marines It's a pretty fun list to play, and I'm looking forward to using acutal models and not marines and water bottles for raiders....

The paint scheme I'm going for is based on the character portrait of Ross from Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones (awesome game!). Brown with a rich blue and white accents.

On the models, it works out something like this…

It works out pretty well on the warriors, and should make the army look pretty good as a whole. The one problem I have is with the basing. I can do it myself, but I would prefer to just buy bases. Of course, I can’t find any I like Suggestions are welcome, of course.

I'll be working on this pretty hard, and so should have good updates for you guys regularly (hold me to it!) I'll be in touch.

Cheers!

J

I like the colour scheme that you've gone for as it makes your models stand out from the usual black and purple dark eldar. I also look forward to seeing how this army develops

Have you tried: http://sciborminiatures.com/ they've got some really nice bases. Hope that helps!

Thanks a lot I'm just hoping the colors translate onto the vehicles well enough. I was going to get a whole bunch more of the warriors painted today, but the primer got all gritty on me so I need to strip them and start again.... Oh well.

What colour are you planning to paint the skin? You could try inverting it for the vehicles, that might be quite cool...

I've been painting the skin as denab stone > bleached bone > gryphonne sepia > bleached bone > skull white. Nice and pallid for the evil space elves. The problem that I've faced so far is that the skin tone is pretty close to the color of the cloth, but I think I'll try to make the skin a little bluer and paler to set it off from the cloth.

As for the vehicles, I've only tried the same scheme as the warriors, the same brown for the main hull, and then blue for glyphs and sails and windscreens and the like. It looks pretty good so far, but a reversal might look good too...

Ugh. I'm home sick today with some sort of flu, so I could have a whole bunch of painting time, or I may be praying to the porcelain god all day. As such, expect updates! or don't

Maybe a blue wash will help differenciate the flesh from the cloth. Have you thought of using a completely different colour for the sails, say red or purple, to make the vehicles really stand out?

Looking forward to the updates. Oh and try and stay alive, your work is very good

A blue wash for the skin is a really good idea. I'll give it a try The problem with sails of a different color is that the sails are the only place, really, where any blue can come out. I think that if I do runes on the vehicle hulls, they'll be in white, so hopefully that'll give it some pop.

I'm sick, but it ain't killin' me yet Cheers, mate.

Glad to help

Yeah that could work quite well, guess we'll have to wait and see.

Hey guys!

I've kicked the illness that had been plaguing me, and have a bit of progress to show. Problem is, I've hit a snag for the color scheme of the wyches. The warriors' brown armor and cloth-colored cloth leads to some issues in with the wyches.

The warriors look like this, and this should be the general scheme of the entire army.

For the wyches, I thought that, at first, I would just continue over the same uniform onto the ladies, too. The problem is that there is a lot more cloth on the wyches than the warriors, which wouldn't be a problem if they also didn't show a lot of skin, and the skin an the cloth blend together, making for a not-so-striking palette.

...as such. My next thought was to try a blue bodysuit and brown armor, a sort of reversal from the warriors.

Next, I tried a reversal of the previous, blue armor and brown body suit.

...And here they are as a group. You can click through to the gallery for a zoomable pic, but I don't know why you'd want to do that. (gakky photo, gakky paint job)

Now, the real question. Which wych wins?

I prefer the body suit to be the darker color. Draw the eyes to the skin and the few pieces of armor by using brighter colors there. The focus of the model shouldn't be on their t-shirt grade armor, haha.

I'd personally go for the brown body-suit/ blue armour, it just looks better and ties in with your warriors more effectively.

Thanks a lot guys. I think that I'll be going with the brown suit/blue armor version. I think that it fits the best with the overall theme.

Speaking of theme, I've written some fluff! Take a look and tell me what you think about it. I know most people just skip over that stuff, but hey, give a read if you like
Spoiler:
Kabal of the Twisting Blade

Founded by the slave Karakul after he led an uprising against the masters of the Kabal of Splintered Truths, the Kabal of Twisting Blades has continued a meteoric rise in power. Specializing in swift and brutal realspace raids, those of the Twisting Blade have gained a bloodthirsty reputation, even amongst their perverted kin. Unlike many kabals, the warriors of the Twisting Blade take prisoners back into the webway very rarely. Possessing few members, the kabal does not have the need for scores of flesh-things, opting to simply execute their captives on the battlefield. As a testament to their attack, they leave their victims behind, impalement their preferred method of display. Forests of bodies on stakes, screaming in agony as they wait to die, mark the battlefields that the kabal has fought upon.

I've been working the first vehicle for the army, a venom. I was in a bit of a rut over what to do about runes. I was toying with doing the stock Dark Eldar runes that grace the GW vehicles and that Mechanicum Jon has been using to great effect, but decided that the round shapes would be a little harder to deal with than I'd prefer. I also feel like I would run into the problem of not being able to come up with new designs. To circumvent this, I thought I could put my years of studying japanese to good use and use kanji. The problem, however is that that doesn't really fit with the theme that I'd like for my army, a sort of Vlad the impaler/tribal cannibal feel. The theme needs something jagged, dangerous, agressive, perhaps a little mentally unstable. Thorny. Perhaps stylized lightning bolts? I grabbed a pencil and sketched out some ideas, and they seemed to work well, so I threw them on the venom, and lo and behold, they worked out well Anyways, enough talk, more pics!

I've also decided on bases for the army, from secret weapon miniatures.

Nice and creepy and gory. Perfect

Expect more fluff and more paint!
Until then

The Venom looks great, the colour scheme looks good on the foot-soldiers but it really works on the Venom!

Bases look disgusting...love it!

I am really pleased at how the venom worked out. It's always a bit of a surprise for me when a paint scheme works out perfectly the first time

I'm looking forward to getting the bases. Though I will probably hate painting them after a while, I'm looking forward to it now. I guess I also need to purchase some water effect and figure out how that works...

Having just finished another batch of 30 bases, I feel your pain.

I've started using this stuff : http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/290512425661?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Goes on easy, has a really sweet effect, just need to be patient with it...apply a layer, wait 24hrs.

Good look when its done, going to play with some red ink to see if I can't replicate bloody water

Thanks for the suggestion Tell me how the bloody water works out. It stands to reason that fields of corpses deserve nothing less

I just got back from a band concert tonight, and have ridiculously fun AP testing all this week, so time's been short. I have gotten an opportunity to work on some fluff, though. I hope you enjoy

Karakul was a slave in the thrall of the Kabal of Splintered Truths, trueborn to parents of the kabal’s servant caste. Karakul would have lived out a life of drudgery and pain had he not participated in a slave rebellion rumored to have been started by Asdrubael Vect himself to destabilize the Kabal of Splintered Truths, which had been raiding shipping lanes perilously close to sectors traditionally plied by Vect’s Kabal of the Black Heart. The revolution began subtly, with the rebel slaves, bolstered by Vect’s henchmen stealing weapons and supplies as they could, sabotaging the rest.

However, the slaves were too eager in their destruction of their master’s property, quickly alerting Archon Trubael as to their plans. Fortunately for the revolting slaves, most of the kabal’s armsmen were out raiding the shipping lanes that Vect so coveted. Lothe to break off the stalking of a convoy, but quite concerned for his power at home, Trubael rallied his forces and set off back to Commorragh. By time the word of the return of the kabal’s warriors reached the depths of the slave pens, it was too late to prevent it. In a futile effort, the slaves took up their stolen arms and launched their coup. In the three days that the slaves roamed the corridors of the spire, Karakul tasted freedom. Having seized a splinter rifle from a murdered kabalite guard, Karakul joined in the riot of violence beneath the spire of the Kabal of Shattered Truths.

With the return of the raiding party, Archon Trubael and his kabal flooded the spire with veteran warriors glutted on pain. The slaves stood no chance. Immediately grasping this truth, Karakul turned his rifle upon his fellow rebels, murdering them by the score alongside the kabalite oppressors. With the coup suppressed, Karakul expected the rewarded for his treacherous service to be admittance into the kabal. His wish was denied Trubael could have had the slave executed, tortured for his part in the uprising, but one does not become an archon without cruelty. Recognizing Karakul’s deep desire for freedom, Trubael spared the slave, but sentenced him to hell. Karakul was thrown back into the depths of the slave pens. Harboring a deep resentment for his stolen freedom that extended beyond the bounds of sanity, Karakul plotted his escape and his vengeance.

I'll have more up later. Stay tuned!
