Hello Dakka,
I have been a 40k fan since I was 15. My first army were necron. I quit playing shortly after my 21st birthday because beer was more important and I moved away from my gaming group. I sold off my first necron army which was mostly "dip", "flick" "flock". Flocking consisted of me going out to the park and finding dried grass that the city maintenance mower has discarded and gluing it to a base ...*cough*, I know...*cough*

SO...I was walking by a Games Workshop a few months ago and felt some nastalgia kicking in. I went in and watched some games. At the time I walked in there were several games going on. There was a Space Wolves VS Tau (tau being new to me and very appealing to the inner Anime lover), a Eldar VS Blood Angels, and Dark Eldar VS Necron.

When I saw the new Necron I kind of girlie squeed. I was stoked to see something more familiar. I sat in the store for a few hours and asked all sorts of noob questions to the Necron player. He was getting his butt kicked but seemed to be in good spirits. (I almost wonder if I was the reason he was getting dominated, being all distracting and such). After his game ended I asked him to show me what a good start would be and he pulled a few boxes of stuff off the shelves. I bought it and went home.

I had totally forgot paints/brushes/blah blah etc etc. I went back the next day and bought the mega paint set. Good start.

I had never been a good painter. I was the least talented in my circle of buddies. I didnt have the patience back then. I decided I wanted these to look decent. I went to a few painting lessons at the store. (By a few I mean like 20+ sessions lol). Each time I would grab a space marine model they had for their painting classes and try a different color pallete. After I found some colors I had an affinity for I would try it again next week. Over the course of 3 months I felt I had a grasp of the basics and began to paint some Necron. I unfortunatly moved away from the GW store where the Doctore of painting trained me in his Ludus so he could never see the fruits of his labor, but I am hoping people here can help me perfect what I've started through comments and the like.

I met a nice guy here where I moved who was kind enough to show me some basic conversions and putty work. He showed me the Necron Warrior green tube thingie conversion, and a couple cryptek conversions. I had a box of 12 warriors, I used 10 for the squad and converted 2 using the bits from the Immortal/Lychguard boxes.

Sorry for the long backstory here, I am new to forums, and even newer to minature based forums. So without further delay I will post some pictures for judgement.

Loving them! I myself am just under 15 so i know how you feel but those are some really lovely conversions and paint schemes. I am very fond the new necron things especially the really new stuff e.g triarch stalkers. But i think i prefer your conversion for the cryptek than the actual model. I look forward to seeing some more mini's (i hope you are planning on doing more). And above all welcome back to the dark side!!!

yeah I am planning to do a combo of Anrakyr and Obyron.

I want to fit a paint theme to the idea that Anrakyr kinda goes around and picks up armies as he goes.

I am no super conversion guy yet so I want to wait and see if they do an Anrakyr model. I want to paint Anrakyr in Black and Bone with a little red to tie him in to the army. All his court will be black to match him.

My idea for the Crypteks was to paint them in color schemes that their type evokes.

Despair to me made me think of the grim reaper. So I did that one in bone, with purple energy (to be dark and emo)

I am painting an Eternity guy atm and he will be blue

The Harp ones I would do brown or bronze

The storm ones would be dark blue and grey with lightning bolts all over them

Destruction red/orange

cant remember the other kinds (if any)

I am writing up a story about how Anrakyr, Zand and Oby were going to the location of a slumbering world to wake it up only to be caught in a battle between 2 other armies. In the events that ensue Zand dies and Oby pledges allegiance to Anrakyr. (Zand and Anrakyr both were honorable in the fluff so I was thinking that Oby would appreciate an attitude simliar to his former lords) The red in my army comes from the world they woke up. (no name for it yet but will be custom) Thus Anrakyr will have his colors (Black and Bone) on his Immortals and Court, Obyron will be colored as he is on the new picture of his model.

Anyways, thanks for the comments, I appreciate them very much, and good luck with your endevours as well.

Dark Side Forever XD

I MIGHT recommend some gloss cover on some of the energy items, might make them brighter ya know?

I havent used the gloss varnish from GW yet, is it any good?

I use Testors DulCoate (or however its spelled) for main protective coat

On the Lord I watered down PVA glue a ton for the metal bits to add gloss but up close its BLINDINLY SHINY

thats really all a matter of personal opinion.

I have found this triple thick gloss coat that cost me $2. its acryllic based so you cna water it down if you need to. I have found it allows me to manage my coverage better. (and its cheaper)

its really all about what you like rather than whats better ya know?

I'll go give a crack at the GW varnish on one of the Lychguard swords and post a pic when I can.

Thanks for the advice Rimmy

Thank you ArbitorIan!

When I was learning to paint again I loved the Blood Angels colors. It was one of the few colors I felt somewhat confident with.

As I get back into the hoby, I really want to try Space Wolves. I bought a box of Gray Hunters, the blue'ish wierdness of that color really makes me nervous.

I like them....the red is smooth as is the silver. Very nice.... I would try to go with more thin coats on the white though.

Thanks for all the kind replies.

I noticed the white looks chunkier on the pictures. I am looking up tutorials on getting better photos. At the moment I only have a desk lamp and my ipad for images. The light source is a bit drastic unfortunately.

removed Space Wolves to put into another forum.

those look fantastic! I think you're worrying about nothing!

remember 2 things about painting:

#1: you are ALWAYS your worst critic.

#2: NEVER paint to please the critics.

seriously those look great. have confidence in yourself. if you feel like you want to improve, read some tutorials, and practice!

I've been at this hobby now for about 12 years, AND was a red shirt, and I still practice. its always something new and exciting.

I am grateful that I could be a source of encouragement for you! Thank you for that!

Yeah, Im not overly fond of the green rods. I had one on the lord on the top and wish I would have waited and grabbed a warscythe from the lychguard kit. Next lord Im going to do that I think.

Thanks again for the comments!

I really, really like your necrons.
The space wolves are very nice too.
I really like the bone and red scheme on the crons, the bone areas are done exceptionally well.
I very much like your crypteks too, love the idea of using different colours to differentiate between the types.
Looking forward to lots more!

Your painting is coming along great for only a few months of practice. I like the neatness of your work and your colour selection is very good! You definitely have an aptitude for painting. I wouldn't worry about messing up either. I have bombed out on a lot of conversions and paintjobs; they sit in a drawer in a dark corner of the house plotting their revenge as their numbers grow..

Oh yeah! Ive got an old toolbox. Some minis call it the isle of misfit toys. They are the skeletons in my closet for sure.

I appreciate the compliment about neat work. By nature im very impatient (thanks ADD). Forcing myself to take time on something is my form of zen.

I am hoping to perfect weathering soon. I think with Anrakyr's barge im going to dare to be bold.

Thanjs again!

New addition. He will be the lord in my Pyrrhian Eternal squad.

Anrakyr, this lord, and the eternals will follow a bone, black, and red scheme.

I did my first real putty work on him. I'm not sure how to link to another post but I have his wip on the painting and modelling under lord with prayer beads

Not sure how I feel about all the balls in the new crons. Seems to me like gw went a little overboard with them. That being said, the lord looks fine without the necklace. But that's just Mr personal opinion.
