Privateer Press' HORDES is on a good way to becoming my favourite tabletop. And I may have played 4 games of HORDES since I first heard of it. The background is a great read, the setting feels like a really fresh take on a lot of old fantasy clichés and I just love the models. I'm already working on a few Trolls, but they are probably only gonna be a second (third?) faction for me. From the moment I first saw the Wrong Eye solo I was hooked on the Blindwater Minion faction. Granted, it is another green/brown army, like I don't have enough of those already, but to hell with it. I want to play Voodoo Alligators!

There's just one problem: How in Gorks name to I paint those guys? And don't tell me something like "google for pictures of Alligators", because I did that. You know what color they are? Browngreygreenblackyellow-ish with dots if they feel like it.




When I think of huge crocodiles/alligators (I know they're not the same, let's pretend they are for the sake of argument), the first thing that comes to my head is Leatherhead from the (new) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon.

He's green, but it's not a very striking color. I might use those colors it when I get around to paint Barnabas, but I'm not sure yet.

I just don't know how to start. A strong green, a camo green, maybe something brown? So I tried a few things and thought I'd share them. This is a blog, so feedback is appreciated.

A small update for whoever's interested. I decided to use a classic green scheme, because I have thing for green and brown and it fits best with the voodoo swamp theme of the Gatormen. If I had seen it before, I might have stolen this awesome idea for albino Gatormen on sewer bases.
Anyway, I'm still working on the first batch, but I hope I can get them finished till friday night for have my first game.

I'm looking forward to painting the Ironback Spitter. There is absolutly no question about what colors I will use for him.

The first models are almost done. I took a quick picture with my phone. You'll get nicer ones when I put on the swamp gras as finishing touch.

Had my first game with the Gatormen tonight and I loved it. The Posse really is one of the toughest units around, my opponent was quite suprised, when he leard, that my melee unit had a larger threat range than his dwarf gunners.
Still got beaten in the end. I thought Maeloks feat would protect me for a turn, but I missed that Gorton Grundback had a magic weapon. He made short work of Maelok. Still a great game.

On the model front, I'm done with the unit and the two beasts, Maelok needs a bit more work though.

Next is probably the Croak Hunter I have here on my table and I'm expecting a Bull Snaper and a Witch Doctor to arrive any day now. Not sure what to get after those. Probably a unit of Bog Trogs.

Go for the Bog trogs, they have a nice look that goes along with the gators and snappers. Then you would have a nice set of Bayou Bullies

Nice collection of crocs, I like the down to earth colors you ended up with. The bases are great and bring the character of the faction to front well.

Right now I have on my table Barnabas, a D&D snake I plan on using as counts-as Bullsnaper and a unit of Bog Trogs which I have absolutly no idea how to paint. Not sure if I want them in yellow, it has to be a color I can paint more sickly, once I get the announced zombie Trogs next year.

I'm still working on the Bog Trogs. I thought a while about what colors to use, but I think I'll settle on a more "healthy" and stronger green to set them apart from the Gators.





Once I'm done with them, I'm painting the Croak Hunter. After that, I hope I can play a few rounds and check out what I like. Can't wait to field my Voodoo Swamp Alligators against my brother's Steampunk Pirates

I'm pretty much done with the Trogs and the frog, but pictures will have to wait till friday, when I have my next game.

Got meself a Boneswarm. Haven't played with it yet, but I love the model.
I'm also working on a Swamp Horror. Cut of a lot of tentacles though, so it looks more like it's halt submerged.

Looking good I've always liked these models.

Hi guys, I'm back.

I did paint a few more models for this gang and one stands out in particular. Did you know that there's a Minion 'Jack Marshal Solo? That means I can actually bring a Warjack into my HORDES army. But which one. It should probably a 'Jack who can deal with all the swampiness, both from a rules and a fluff point. But he's not weird enough yet. I need to convert him somehow. Why, hello there random steampunk tabletop game with mechanical crocodile, do you mind if I borrow something?
