I've always wanted to make a small nurgle army of some sort and recently I have been thinking about having a dabble back in my first ever 40k army Orks, so why not put them together I thought. This is only going to be a small project, probably a killteam force, more for conversion painting than playing. However can anyone see any holes in the following fluff:

Someone somewhere with in the Imperium has genetically engineered a parasitic fungal species to kill orks, hoping to turn the tide in the war against them. It was trialled in an isolated ork world and at first worked very well. The disease decimated the ork population. However an opportunity was given to the warlord that Nurgle would protect those that still lived in return for worship. Being nothing if not practical, and seeing as Gork and Mork were obviously not interested in protecting them, the orks agreed.

The Imperium caught on to what was happening and nuked the planet, but not before a small number escaped. The orks not only survived with Nurgle's blessing but activly thrived and the Nurgle cult was born.

You do realize you just called orks practical, right?

Other than that, fairly solid story.

A group of smelly, ugly, green Orks worshipping a smelly, ugly, green God, sounds good to me.

Those Nurgle Orks look cool!

Keep in mind that Orks falling to Chaos is about as rare as the existence of Blanks-- Orks are inherently resistant to the effects of Chaos, and the dark gods hold no real sway over them. If nurgle managed to mind control them through disease, it might work, but that's about the only way really. And also, sure you can include them, but they would be utterly unable to hide their fall to other Orks, so they'd have to have a way of defeating or getting away from proper, REAL Orks.

Including all new born Orks, whom would not likely be effected by the disease.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Another problem is if the Imperium of man have a fungal infection that decimates most orks wouldn't that just be used to wipe out all orks?

More realistic approach is that they're just plague orks. Who caught one of nurgles very virile diseases. They're resistant to the temptations of chaos but not real world disease. (Well they are but mabye not of papa nurgles homebrew)

I also vaguely(!) recall a case where Orks were turned into Nurgle cultists because they encountered a Nurgle shrine and thought it belonged to Gork or Mork, so there's manipulation (or stupidity ) in the range of options as well.

They are resistant to disease, even Nurgle's diseases. But that doesn't mean that Nurgle couldn't concoct something that might effect a small portion of an Ork population, then figure out a way to get that portion separated. Of course, it might just be a one-time thing.

Heck, an even better idea is that they're zombies controlled by a nurgle disease in their deceased brains.

nurgle orks...now that's awesome. Even tougher to kill kinda makes me wonder if all orks couldn't go the way of chaos...might be cool to see them finally realize they've been worshiping khorne the entire time and some fall to berserkers or some into noise boyz (orks with guitars)

I remember that picture.. it was in the (3rd?) edition Chaos SM codex.. when Nurgle models actually had some decent Chaos abilities... maybe the Orks could have their own powers unique to their clan.

To answer the questions:

Yes, I can't see them getting on well with 'normal' orks. But as their homeworld has just been destroyed and they are fleeing the imperium who wish to destroy them, I see them as a sort of freebooter cult.

New born Orks sporned from the nurgle orks would carry the parasitic virus, they would not all join the cult, it would depend what surroundings they hatched into, but quite a few I suspect would, seeing as they have a choice of dying or joing a group of baddass orks that go round killing stuff.

The Imperium won't use the virus again as when the tried it out it left behind a small amount of really bad ass orks that are now breeding a resiliant strain. Kinda like MRSA.

Oh, and for some reason I can't see the picture.

Makes more sense, but what would you rather face, 10,000 tough Orks or 1000 Super tough orks.

I think I will go with super tough, just bring better weapons.

It's workable though.
