I imagine you did that with an airbrush holding up some sort of circle size stencil and sprayed past it?

Exactly - just cut some round / oval shapes - will be better if not only circle but some oval - than put it on model and very delicate airbrush on edges.
One tip - start from darker colours and go to lighter ones - very nice transparent effect.
Effect will be very visible already on 2nd colour - I used 3.
