This Is Where the Fish Lives

Hey all- This is my first of a squad of Grey Knight Terminators. I am entering a painting contest for Best Unit (28mm) at my FLGS for their 2 year birthday party. I have been painting since February of this year and this is only my second Grey Knight (I usually paint normal SMs) but I felt like doing something I haven't done much of so decided to paint up some GKs instead! I have a Table War display board and washers on the way and will make a little diorama/display for the entire squad. Pictures of that will follow. If any one has questions on how I wound up with this guy painted, feel free to ask. Also, please feel free to leave and feedback (good or bad)!

P.S.- Sorry for the harsh lighting... I will be getting a photo box very soon. Maybe tonight if I wander over to Amazon...

Very clean. Very well done. Can't wait to see more in better lighting (can't really see the detail on the engraved writing in this light). Good luck in the painting contest, you're off to a great start.

Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee.

I'ts definitely a nice model however for competition i would suggest not going with that style of power weapon for a few reasons

1. its over used and it wont be noticed regardless of how well you did it
2. by doing something to it thats not as common youll get noticed for it and the judges will see it and be like oh cool and not pass over it like its everyday stuff like that style has become

you could do a nmm black and then go over the top 3/4 with blue getting more and more solid toward the tip till its bright basically nmm black and then a blue gradient from not visible to bright vibrant
glowing blue or lightning is even less common than the blue white glow so maybe a lightning look wouldnt be bad but i guarantee you that if there are other powerweapon entry's that will be there 8 times out of ten

also try to get that bubble off the shoulder shield just exacto it carefully and repaint

osl the eyes if you can
maybe shade the armor a little more so its a little less flat same with the gold on the power weapon

might be done already but its hard to tell with how much light is on the armor and weapon
best of luck ! let us know how you did

Wow thats so cool, I hope my new grey knights will look anything like that, then again I'm more of a gamer than a painter but anyway...

Loveing the base, makes it stand out so much more

Is it the light, or does the writting parts such as the shoullder pads and on the legs have a redish hint to it?

I agree 100% that the style is overdone. Your suggestion interests me and I think I know what you are saying but if you could show me an example, I would appreciate it! It sounds like it could be cool.

The armor is shaded with a home brew black/blue wash, the crappy lighting seemed to wash it out. However, it probably could use another pass to up the contrast a little. I also agree with the eyes, I was nervous at first to try and OSL them, but I will attempt it. Thank you for you honest critique, I really do appreciate to an honest opinion!

Tuiman- yes, the gold engraving does have red in it. It was done with Vallejo Liquid Gold: Old Gold and them a careful red wash in the recesses. I think it brings a little more color to it than a brown/sepia wash does.

heres some pics i just did this up a minute ago sorry its not perfect but i just wanted to show you what i mean

i based it in black then highlighted the top half of the blade long ways in a lighter grey and then again in a lighter grey
then i drew lightning lines with rather wet white paint
then airbrushed a light sky blue gently over the length of the blade leaving the bottom 1/4 grey and black the wet white gets diluted to a light white blue lightning
then i proceeded to darken the tip with more blue leaving it fairly vague by the hilt

since i just woke up i didnt do so well with the blue you want the blue to be more not there its too blue but thats my fault i think you can still see what im going after here

black grey blade wit hvery white grey highlight on the length wise edge in the middle of blade paint wet white lightning airbrush whiteblue to satisfaction while diluting the lighting

idea is to creat a smokey blue tint over the lightning

over all though something different than the blue white combo will pop more and thats all im really saying not that this is you best bet but its something not blue and white glow

i play guard mech and WoC so i dont do alot of swords im out of practice lol

edit- click to view fullsized images they show it alot alot better

see too much blue be more gentle with it
