layer on with this layers of paint!

basecolor of scorched brown mixed with shining gold
thin layer of shining gold
paint the top half of parts with burnished gold
paint the edges with a 50:50 mix burnished gold and mithril silver
tip the outer edges or angles with pure mithril silver

I always just mix a bit of white in with the paint to brighten it up, but this is metalic and that might draw away from it.
But it probably still works.

Another thing would be that when you've basecoated the model put fortress grey on the bits your going to highlight then skull white on the extremes your going to higlight. Then just paint the colour over it.

I haven't tested this with metallics but it probably will work.

krimsun, the method you are referring to is preshading and wont work that well on metallics... if it works at all...

preshading is a technique that works really well when using an airbrush, but wont work with normal brushwork

It works perfectly well with normal lighter coloured paints if correctly watered down or straight out of the pot for some paints.

Metallics I wasn't sure on, it might work though.

without an airbrush i wouldnt count on it... and then again, thats pre shading, not highlighting

I've found a silver looks fantastic as a gold highlight. I was experimenting and stumbled upon it by accident. The results seriously made my gold minis look much better. Here's an example of it in action:
