Subject: Daemonfae's emporium of printable terrain (METAL BOXES!)
|
 |
Spawn of Chaos
|
Hello my dearest Hobby enthusiasts.
I guess I should introduce myself; I have lurked this board for many many years (along with several others). The last time I painted a complete army was when smelly primer was bought in a flip-top (before the screwtops which came before the more modern fliptops oh dear) but I've never lost my love of the hobby. Today I found out that the department I work for at my employer is going to be downsized (by half) and I am one of the casualties... This leaves me with some spare time for the forseeable future, but no money to buy little plastic soldiers.
So what does one do? Well first one has a beer, and then one stumbles accross Dsteingass' most excellent necromunda thread.
And that gave me an idea! I know I'm not the only one in a pinch and I used to love the Card terrain necromunda came with... and I'm pretty handy with photoshop!
I used to do more "artwork" type photomanips like the following (which you may have seen before)
But now, now I want to give back to the community which has supplied me (unbeknownst to them muahahaha) with years of browsing joy. I want to start making printable terrain. I know this kind of diverges from the usual "painting and modelling" you find in this section of the forum (please dont hurt me mods!), but painting with a wacom stylus is still painting right?
Anyways, I want to start making some flat pieces to get back in the groove, since my old job kept me from photoshopping as much as I'd like, so some space hulk-ish or Warhammer Quest-y stuff (or tunnels for your =][=-munda/killteam/special missions!) seems like a good start before moving on to buildable 3D papercraft toys (and ammo crates and bunkers and barricades and SHUT UP BRAIN) for you lot
Here's something I whipped up in about...15 minutes before logging in today as a small example:
If you guys like this, I need your help!
Most of my hobby stuff was destroyed/lost in several moves of the years (except for my old paint pots, which now contain glorious tentacle pink rocks and the like) and I need some specs!
So let's assume we're gonna make some spacehulk compatible tiles, I need someone to tell me the following:
-What is the size of a single spacehulk tile?
-What width is the border around each seqment?
-Can someone give me some good measurements on the connect-y bits on SH map segments so I can try to make bits compatible?
What do you say buddies? Will you help me?

hello demonfae9... would love to help a chap but i am unfortunatly too poor to get me a box of spacehulk meself too...bloody hell...
but i do like your stuff... i am atm building up a board game that has some striking similarities to spacehulk myself... tho the scheme i am going for is more steampunk / victorian related... so more brickwork and cobblestone than steel and plaster... but i do apreciate the look and style you are chucking out!
the only question with 2D terrain tho is ... how does it work with all those height issues? what aboutr cover and such things?
anyway... i wish you luck and that you get enough airtime to get yourself the answers needed!
cheers, vik

Thanks for replying Vik!
Well flat terrain is for flat gameplay, but I'm a bit rusty so before I get myself in trouble trying to make a paper basilica, I figured I'd make some flat thingies first.
Spacehulk/warhammer quest come to mind first of course, but I could easily make a set of cool tunnels to represent crazy-badass necromunda tunnelfights or killteam missions for 40k.
I used to make my own 3D terrain like this, long long ago, when vortex grenades were still in Vogue. But I'm way rusty. xD

That's a while away yet While I wait on spacehulk specs, I think I'm just gonna make a simple slanted-box-type bunker to warm up, like the one that was in every battlereport in the early 90s white dwarf mags

well i think i would always vote for totally self measured stuff.... that way no one could get you for violating any ip issues... keep it rather generic and you are safe and sound to present everything at your hearts desire...

ok, well if that is the case, here you go!
Now, I could have spent another 2-3 days detailing and perfecting this thing, but I really wanted something "out there" for people to try, so I'll call this one "done for now"

print one out and build it
you may want to put a little 3inch tall cylinder of card inside it for sturdiness btw.
I'd love to see pictures of some assembled ones! (I am utterly out of ink at the moment :( )

I use heavyweight printing paper for my stuff, but it gets a bit expensive... you really do want some actual printing paper for the coating it has though, it takes the ink much much better.
What you could do if you're feeling fancy is use thin printing paper, and a can of spray glue. Glue the paper to thin card and hey presto!
I'd still recommend some heavy duty photo matte paper though (for reference, mine has the same thickness as magic: the gathering cards xD )
