I'm not a big fan of Flock Trees. I've tried them before and they just made a mess, they get deformed and most of them (to me) look like green clouds on sticks. I do like GW's Jungle Trees and I like their Citadel Woods, however I prefer to make my own terrain and buy my models.

So I set out to create my own Citadel Woods style forest. Now I've only got the one tree and this one was made to see how well it would work. My next trees will be about half the size and mounted on 40mm and 60mm bases.

The main tree is made with a wire frame. Followed by applying Cheap (non absorbent) Toilet Tissue Paper mixed with watered down PVA Glue. This gave a great bark effect, it took a few days to dry, but as it dried it shrank and got hard. The foliage is made from cereal boxes. I cut out the shapes I wanted then I punched out the leaf shapes with a Small Leaf Punch I had purchased just for this project.

Over all I really like the tree! I'm waiting for my bases to arrive in the mail and then I will set out making about a dozen more.

Yes I did while either watching movies on LoveFilm or NetFlix, or playing Civilization V.

They look really cool, but I can see you becoming a major film buff by the time you've mad a forest- perhaps you could rope the whole family into helping and call it a film night!
I look forward to seeing how the rest of them turn out.
Do you have any different leaf shapes to be able to do different species of tree?

Trunk looks great (I also think a tutorial would be a nice addition to Dakka's collection, if you find the time while expanding your forest), but I'm not a fan of the large, flat sheets of foliage. I'd consider breaking them up into more and smaller sections that can be layered more densely (also reducing the need to employ seriously wonky angles to get coverage).

As far as tedium is concerned, I think I'd cut a substrate for each section, coat it in PVA, then press it onto a pile of leaves scattered on the table (or a sheet of paper, more likely, to reduce mess). Should give you full coverage and a suitable degree of randomness to the lay of the leaves (which could be pre-painted, or you could just paint each section, once glued).

Very nicely done.

Adam's Motto: Paint, Create, Play, but above all, have fun. -and for something silly below-

"We are the Ultramodrines, And We Shall Fear No Trolls. bear this USR with pride".

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

You must recite every rule of Dakka Dakka. BACKWARDS.

Starting on the smaller version. I will make one smaller tree then I will make a tutorial with the next one. First will be the 40mm based trees.

I've broken the levers off of two leaf punches. The second one I used just on light weight card. Next one I get will have just a vertical button and not some flimsy plastic lever. I can still use said lever punch, it is just a bit harder. They really should make them out of metal only like a standard paper punch.

I've gotten 5 trees done so far, three more to go.

I hope to finish these this week. I got side tracked (as I usually do) on other projects

Yes I know, Necro Thread. However it is directly related and I thought there was no reason to start another thread about the same project.

HERE is the Tutorial on how to make your own.
